We all know it when we smell it, and it's eerily the same regardless of make, model, shape, or size.
Is it the new plastic?
The carpet?
Is there some magic scent that manufacturers impregnate the interior with?

Why do all new cars smell the same?

(just one of those things that crossed my mind while having my coffee this morning)

I'd heard it was the plastic and adhesives off gassing, and that "if you knew what it was, you wouldn't love it so much."

You smell the various glues and plastics outgassing as they cure. Probably not the best thing for you.

This is what I'm going with.  Get the windshield replaced and you get the new car smell back for a while.

But new cars have smelled great for years........even before the widespread use of plastics.

A lot of work goes into making sure that the customer gets that positive association with that smell even as far as artificially creating that smell sometimes

I'm no chemist, but it is probably a mixture of volatile organic hydrocarbons with dash of phthalates.

It's what most of the posters have said here, new plastics, adhesives, and glues. The smell can't be duplicated, unless you have some or all of those things replaced new.

So, if I understand this correctly, and I trust the offered opinions, the new car smell is evidence of a hazmat scene

Oh well....I grew up in NJ....it can't be any worse that the superfund sites we played on as kids

It is none of that, it is a spray that dealers use on the cars. That's all.

In Rolls Royces, Ferraris, Bentlys, Mercedes, BMWs, and Jaguars it is the smell of leather.

I have no idea what the smell is from in plactic cars––but it is probably toxic in some way.

VW is the "worst" about new car smell.  I have one that is 10 years old and has over 150k miles on it, and I swear it still has some of that "new car" smell.
