This one's a small bore, .36 caliber. Oak tiller with Sedona red stain and five coats of Tru-oil.

And with a couple others, a .50 and a brass .32.

I'm almost done with a transitional piece, a .75 with a serpentine lever. Just need to paint the serpentine and it'll be done.

Ya know, those would probably do pretty well at drawing in new people to shooting. Let 'em have a go at hitting a jug of water or some such. If they miss with the first shot, you just know they'd want to try again. And again...

The only time I watched one of those stupid gun reality shows a guy was making what was supposed to be a hand gonne (it was truly an abortion).  He kept saying "this is the first time in hundreds of years that someone has made one of these.  Neva been done befo!"    I kept thinking, "there's a whole section on the muzzleloading forums of people making those.

I buy some from a high school student who's training to become a machinist. He makes them for fun in his spare time. I also just bought a golf ball mortar from him, should be here in a day or two. But there are other places online where you can order them. I got my .75 barrel from The Rifle Shoppe. I'll be done with that one today. I bought it over a year ago, but I wasn't happy with the first tiller I made for it so I just made a new one. It's pretty big, overall length is 74". But you need to call them and ask if they have what you want in stock. They take orders but they don't start making parts until they have enough to make a batch. I've heard of guys waiting a couple of years for parts from them. They make good quality stuff, but you'll be waiting a while if they don't already have what you want in stock.

This guy is active in the cannon forum on Graybeard Outdoors:

http://www.blackpowder-cannons.com/index.htm

I think this guy is temporarily not making gonnes, but he has a nice gallery of stuff. You can contact him and ask when he'll be back in production.

http://www.handgonne.com/arsenal.html

I had a couple other links, but I can't find them now. I'll try to dig them up.

Yeah, there's a youtube video I posted here recently, some guy's response to that episode. He shot down everything they said on that show. I agree with pretty much everything he said.

Awesome.  I can't decide if I like this one or the one in your first post better.

How exactly do you attach the tiller?  Turn it down on a lathe to the right diameter, slather it with some period correct JB Weld, and beat the barrel on with a mallet?

You can make it as long as you want. I've seen some short ones, and my two smallbores are shorter. But they're long enough to shoot like they were back in the day, with the tiller held under one arm, or in both hands, or over the shoulder (my .75 is pretty big, though).

I don't use any power tools, except for a drill. If you have a dowel the right size, you can just stick it in the socket. But if it's not a tight fit, you can use glue if you want to make it permanent. I use larger ones and reduce the size a few different ways. Some I just carve to shape with a chisel, rasp and sandpaper. With the .44, I drilled the end and glued a dowel in the hole to serve as the peg. It was a bit loose in the socket, so I soaked the peg in hot water to make it swell up so it fits tight. None of them are on permanently, but they fit tight enough to be secure.

I posted a short video a few posts up, it's my son shooting the small brass one.

I finished the new tiller for my .75 a few days ago. I had another one on it that I wasn't happy with, so I made a larger one. This one is hemlock, and I added a serpentine to hold a slowmatch, to make it similar to the earliest known picture of a hand-held firearm that has a trigger mechanism. That's this one, from 1411:

Some pictures I took today. Overall length is 74". First two are with a bolt-action for a size comparison.

Group picture.

Starting with the small brass one, the calibers and wood type are .32 oak, .36 oak, .50 poplar, .44 birch, and .75 hemlock. Stained various colors and finished with Tru-oil.

Smashy, I thought you were just being cute with the 'handgonne' thing but now I get it .

Are the white metal ones steel, stainless, or what?

I'm assuming non-period-correct stainless due to appearance.

I have some axle shafts laying around that might be good material for this sort of thing...

The barrels are removable so they can be stashed easily. All that's left is a stick.

I usually use punks that I buy every year at a local fireworks stand. I know of someone who uses an incense stick. You can use slowmatch just held in your hand, or with a linstock, which is basically a stick with a wire attached to hold the match. Here's an example:

I just realized you meant how to make it. First you need some rope. Cotton rope will work. Hemp is better. You can order some from online dealers. Turkey Foot Traders is a good place (bottom half of the page):

http://www.turkeyfootllc.com/Hemproducts.html

Then you'll need potassium nitrate. United Nuclear sells it.

http://unitednuclear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=87&products_id=179

There are also several sellers on Amazon that sell it.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=potassium+nitrate

Then follow the steps here:

http://www.metamuseum.com/us/slowmatch/

You can also use blackpowder (real blackpowder, not substitutes like Pyrodex) instead of pure potassium nitrate. The rope will absorb the potassium nitrate in the blackpowder, the sulfur and charcoal will remain in the water. I haven't tried it. Personally, I'd rather save my blackpowder for shooting.

When it's dry, it's ready to use.

I make my own match.

I have more KNO3 than I will probably ever use in a lifetime.

One thing I have learned is to put dye in the solution, so the match does not get confused with the new cord.

Here is my tubular linstock (that match was made before I started dying it brown) . . .

Taxes? It's just not even a complete muzzleloader, just a barrel. All you need is the cash necessary to have someone make the barrel for you (unless you can make your own). But who knows with places like New Jersey, Chicago, D.C., etc. Those places have such weird laws that it might be considered an assault weapon (which it was, 700 years ago).

But if you can buy a muzzleloader barrel where you live without ending up doing time in the pokey, then you shouldn't have a problem.
