Miroku Reproduction Winchester 1895 Sporting Rifle 30-Gov't 1906

Reading the book Rough Riders by Teddy Roosevelt kinda got me in the mood to shoot this rifle

you and me both

honestly I wish Winchester would either do a repro Russian contract rifle or a sporter in 7.62x54mmR

call me crazy but I think it would sell

I didn't realise there were so many here looking for a Czarist contract military musket.

Me too.

Here's my 1895 in .30-03.

Beamy, once you get it to the range, post up some targets and a range report. I haven't seen many of the repro 95's but would pick one up in .405.

I make it from .280 brass. Pretty much the only difference is a longer neck, so making it from longer neck .280  and necking it up to .30. I could use .30-06, but it would have quite a bullet jump into the leade.

I wouldn't if I were Winchester. Too many people would shoot corrosive surplus and demand warranty work.

huh, I'd really never thought about that, granted I don't even run corrosive through my Mosins. Typically I run either Silver Bear, Wolf, or Tula through them

Wasn't TR's "Big Medicine" in a larger bore diameter?  .405 comes to mind ...

Friend has one in 405 Win.  You might say it thumps a bit.  But since ammo is about $4 a shot its not a huge issue.  Not sure he's put twenty rounds thru it in ten years.

Yes that has been on my dream list for a long time. Screw the sporter idea, I want it full repro with bayonet lug and all. Seems like it would be a good job for Cimmarron or Uberti to tackle.

The peep is very good.  I don't remember which brand it is (think its Lyman), but its about the only peep available for the 1895.  I have it mounted using only one screw (it has a longer one that replaces the screw in the stock.  Theres another hole for another screw, but that would involve drilling and tapping the tang, and then it would probably affect the tang safety as well.

With all that said, the one screw holds up to 405 Winchester recoil just fine.  No problems with the bolt possibly hitting it either.

Me like the takedown...

I didn't realize that any modern production was takedown.

finally got some time to shoot it today. Tried some 150gr and 180 gr Powerpoints with it at 50yds. Using the factory irons sights my group size was about two inches using both the 150's and 180's. Culd be better but for iron sights I'm not complaining. After this I was banging at some 2 ft steel gongs at 200yds with just for shits and giggles.

I'm thinking with a Lyman receiver peep sight this would make a pretty fun deer/ elk rifle
