Ive had it since I was a kid, a neighbor gave it to me when I was about 8 along with some of his old uniforms.
I wish I had included some thing for scale, but it's about 3ish feet high and maybe 6-7 inches across at base. (Just guesses, I took these pics and I'm not near the shell right now to add more info.)

looks like a ww2 5 inch naval gun casing, maybe?

Measure across the mouth opening to get the gun bore diameter. What's the nomenclature on the base? T32E7?

Looks like a 90mm or 105mm M48 or M60 tank main gun casing.

Does it say 90 or 105mm on that upper arc? I can't quite read the stampings

155mm howitzer shell?

Didn't they use a 30-30 blank to ignite the propellant charge?

To add more useless info, it rings very loudly, like a bell when pounded on with an old blue practice rifle grenade (Don't have that anymore, too bad) and I have used it as a  trashcan for paper and smallish items since I got it.
It's been the gun room wastebasket for the last 20 years.

105s have straight walls.

155s are separate loading and do not have cases.

Nor do they use blanks.  They use primers.

M19 case. S_T wins, judging by my google searches

It's taller than any of the pics of 105 shells I have found, and necked down. But the base looks similar. That's what I always called it when  I was a kid, but I've been unsure since I found pics way back when.
I've always wondered what it came from.

Think so? The case in the illustration looks stubbier, and I'm pretty sure it's brass, not steel like that says.

ETA: Just looked at some pics of them. I think you guys got it. There is a pic of one that's all cleaned up & shiny brass and it looks about the same. Hmm.

So, what does everybody think; should I polish it up to look like this? https://www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDetail.asp?ahid=4345&aid=35391&lid=9620738

Your picture is rusted steel, and on the case head at the bottom it says MV 3000, a number mentioned in S_T's link, along with T33E7.

Also, it appears stubby because it is not a scale illustration. The wavy blank spots that cut vertically across the cartridge diagram are cutouts to fit to space.

Hmm. Doesn't look like rusted steel in person. The camera flash brought that out on the bottom & made it look like rust, looks more like heat discoloration in person and it's very smooth.
I guess I'll hit it with some Flitz & find out.

ETA: Color looks almost exactly like this in person (not my pic)

Yep - M82 percussion primers.

There are actually developmental lasers that will replace the need for primers.

Since primers come in little metal ammo cans they take up a lot of cube and add a lot of weight, all by themselves.  Not to mention that they make automated loading much more difficult than it has to be.

Dunno. I guess I'll polish it & see.
It's not like it's a priceless collectible and I'm ruining the patina or anything.

The rough spots on the base are from years of me dragging it around & dropping it on rough concrete. Where it has shown corrosion (very little since I've had it) it has been a bluish verdigris like you get on brass & copper.

The old Battleships had 3 inch guns on them also. Looking for a pic now.

Hmm...40mm Bofors?

Here's the 3" naval though

I think I'm going to buy an inert projectile for it now that I know what it is.

Which one of these do you guys think would look best in it?

Brasso or Nevr Dull and elbow grease.  Cleaned up quite a few large pieces of brass that would come up in a scallop drag.
