If anyone is interested, this guy has a lot of pics of WWII war correspondent insignia, uniforms, and gear.

ETA, I never realized how small that Underwood typewriter was until I saw it laid against the uniform in the first pic.

That sucker was small!

Does anyone know if it took standard 8 1/2" x 11" paper stock?

Why does a War Correspondent have a Combat Infantrymans Badge?

Because he wasn't always a war correspondent?

Currently Contractors in uniform are still allowed to wear personal awards iirc.

I have to think that a war corrsespondent would be both the most interesting and the most dangerous job during WWII.

They were armed with little but a typewriter but to do their job well, they had to go into some of the most intense combat areas.

Ernie Pyle is an excellent example but many did about what he did even if they weren't as talented at telling their tales.

We are fortunate that they did this because it helps us to understand just what it was like for those soldiers.

Those soldiers were our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.  What they went through should be remembered.

Believe it or not I had a typewriter that was smaller than that when I got out of the army and lived in the tipi.
I took a couple semesters of college when I got out and a course in news photography and learned basics on a 4x5 Speed Graphlix like the one the guy in the lower photo is carrying. (It was pretty mych obsolete then, but was a good training aid at the time.)

Damn, what size paper did your typewriter use?

Ah, back in that short time frame when journalists weren't basically spies.

How does a civilian war correspondent get a CIB?

It would. The map case under it fits standard letter-size paper, and it's narrower than the typewriter is.
I have a period Royal Quiet DeLuxe portable ('39-'41 production) that's about the same size. Fits 8.5x11 just fine. Still types great too
