I'm trying to school a few anti-gun idiots (I know, don't waste your time, etc etc.) and I want to present a comparison of some "assault weapons" vs ban compliant weapons.

I know I've seen some before (though I can't find on google), some guns that are technically "assault weapons" but are dressed up in wood furniture and look like "fudd guns".

Then you have some of your ban compliant guns that are dressed up in black furniture and can actually look quite nice and military style (what a BS term by the way).

Of course, they will say the black gun is the "assault weapon" and then I will educate them.

Pics anyone?

the Ruger AC556 is a selective rifle "assault rifle", wood stock etc.. full auto mini-14

M2 carbine (selective fire m1)

Try pics of an m1a in a wood stock vs an m1a in a sage stock. That's how I converted my dad. He said the wood one was ok but the other wasn't. Until I showed him it was the same gun!

I'd just tell them to fuck off, I have no patience for that shit anymore.

don't further feed them the "assault weapon" line.

M1 Garand's are semi auto and clip fed.  Perfectly legal in CA if I am not mistaken.

M1A's and M1 carbines both have wood stocks and use detachable magazines.

Try showing them a baseball bat and then show them how it could be an "assault baseball bat" by hitting them over the head.

The easiest argument is to take them shooting one at a time. 90% of anti "assault weapon" people have never shot one.

It's like a bunch of men arguing over the best way to manage menstural cramps.

Most AKs have wood furniture, but few would mistake them for "fudd guns."

Just sayin.'

The HK SL8-1 looks "evil" but doesn't really have any (previously) bannable features.

Its true sometimes this is the best way to help the anti-gunners. Take them shooting….Most have never even held a gun, and are scared from the media. Sometimes they just need to see for themselves.

Sounds to me like all you'll do is give them even more guns to hate on.

They're not going to find any new-found love for the evil assault rifle no matter what you compare it to.

I suggest you take a slightly different approach. Instead of focusing on what defines an assault rifle, focus on solutions to our nation's current problems. Because within that discussion, anyone else who's honestly looking for solutions as well will come to realize that banning guns is not a viable approach (even if they don't respect the 2A).

We should be talking about mental health care, school security, and the underlying social issues which contribute to the violence in our society. Addressing such problems with gun control isn't even a band-aid solution. Band-aids at least help for a little while.

Assault Weapon = Any weapon or item that is used to assault someone... IE a term used by the Media and others to vilify an inanimate object.

That's why i put "assault weapon" in quotes in my OP. I know the difference between real, select fire assault weapons, and semi automatic sporting rifles.

I was looking for like an AR with wood furniture and a 15 round mag or something like that which would actually fall under 94 AWB legislation, and then some "evil looking" black gun that is ban compliant.

Normally, I just ignore the idiots, but there's one guy that's generally very conservative that's gotten me all riled up. He says he is pro gun (liar), but supports banning mags > 10 rounds, and banning "assault weapons".

I think he is very close, so I'm trying to reason him over the edge to our side.

And yes - we have discussed the other topics you mentioned.

Even better since some of these have 12 rd capacity.

Assault weapon?  How many rds/min does it take to be one?

Now?

ETA from Wiki:
The fast-operating Lee bolt-action and large magazine capacity enabled a well-trained rifleman to perform the "Mad minute" firing 20 to 30 aimed rounds in 60 seconds, making the Lee-Enfield the fastest military bolt-action rifle of the day. The current world record for aimed bolt-action fire was set in 1914 by a musketry instructor in the British Army—Sergeant Instructor Snoxall—who placed 38 rounds into a 12-inch-wide (300 mm) target at 300 yards (270 m) in one minute.[10] Some straight-pull bolt-action rifles were thought faster, but lacked the simplicity, reliability, and generous magazine capacity of the Lee-Enfield. First World War accounts tell of British troops repelling German attackers who subsequently reported that they had encountered machine guns, when in fact it was simply a group of trained riflemen armed with SMLE Mk III rifles.[11]

"Assult Weapons" is a media/leftist created term to make it sound more scary...

True.

For my own curiosity - can a select fire sub machinegun properly be called an assault weapon or an assault rifle? Or is it just a sub machinegun?

From 1994.  What is an Assault Rifle?  You have probably been lied to. (Youtube)

If they watch a 10 minute video, Watch the Leroy Pyle video filmed during the run-up to the 94 weapons ban. He's a former San Jose Ca. police officer. He explains the difference between weapons and at the end of the video, he switches stocks to show how silly basing bans on looks really is.

ETA: Go to 5:55 to see him swap stocks on a mini14
ETA again, Previous posters pointed to a different upload of the same video.

well according to the recent news drama this is also an assault gun:

the problem here is you're trying to "educate" a group of people who's judging weapons with their emotions and not with logic.  I wish you luck... you're going to need it.

This thing, despite having no pistol grip... that has nice wood parts is a devastating automatic weapon.

This thing, is a .22lr plinker gun good for maybe hunting squirrels.
