Can you get a mini judge to shoot it out of?
Yup.

Works great for rats.  You gotta get close though.  It's only effective out to about 15 feet, if that.  I used to do pigeon control and would load up a couple of revolvers with it and climb silos at night.  Open the door and have at the flying vermin.  It wouldn't pierce the tin roof of the silo but it would slaughter the pigeons.

Had a case where a couple of tweekers decided a 3rd tweeker was going to snitch them out.  So they drove out to the desert and the passenger turned around and shot him in the face with a .22 loaded with birdshot.

(Insert the "I just shot Marvin in the face!" joke here)

It just left him bloody and in pain.  So they felt bad and dropped him off at the local ER.  Where he did snitch them out.  Seems that while it didn't kill him (or even blind him), being shot in the face by birdshot from 2 feet away upset him greatly.

Make of this story what you will.

Savage used to sell a smoothbore 22lr specifically for those rounds.

Rifling causes the pattern to swirl and makes it useless beyond a few feet.

The only real good use I can think of for it would be shooting carpenter bees out of the air.  That is FUN.

it's worthless.  I shot a paper target stapled to plywood once and it ricocheted back and peppered me.  I was about 10 feet away from the target.  It didn't even hurt.

Pop the top off and turn them into wax slugs!

.22lr Wax Slug.......

Fuck, I shouldn't have posted that, now even .22lr bird shot will vanish!

These rounds are loaded with #12 birdshot, sometimes called "dust" shot.

They will kill a mouse or rat or even a snake if it isn't too big and you are really close.

They are also good for shooting pigeons in barns, as the shot will not hurt the roof of the barn.

They have very limited use.

It might come in handy. I think I'll buy it.

Thanks everyone.

have a revolver loaded up with it for snake duty in the yard...
far more likely to run across a "bad" snake than a "good" snake down here

its smaller than carrying a .410 and smaller than carrying a .22 rifle

My grandfather used to call it "rat shot".  He would use it to clear out rats from the barn without causing damage to anything in the barn.

It's great for small critters at close range.  The intent is to shoot vermin in a barn/basement/shed type area and shoot with minimal damage to structure and no major ricochet concerns.  Beyond this, it sux!

Yup, I have a Savage MK I smoothbore with about 200 roounds of CCI shotshells I got from my Dad when he passed away a couple years ago. Still haven't shot the thing.

You can actually find old smoothbore 22s w/ 18" bbls designed for these rounds. Think Savage might still make one.

I used to open up the crimped metal rounds and replace the ratshot with 3 BBs to make mini-buckshot shells.
They weren't all that impressive and were probably hell on the rifling in my Savage Mk2

One of the LGS, the only .22 ammo they have in stock is  Federal #12 birdshot rounds.

They were selling for 11.95 per box of fifty, which is much cheaper than the CCI rounds, but still, expensive.

I traded a brick of .22 for a brick of the birdshot rounds.

Bound to come in handy for something.

Also traded a two bricks of cheap federal for one brick of RWS Special Match.  I had $35 or so in the cheap stuff and got $120+(regular price) worth of match ammo for my 541T.

it's a great training round. My daughter got a cricket .22 fo Christmas. She shoots clay target with the birdshot. Fun for kids because it blows up the clay target & I don't have to worry if she misses and sends a bullet downrange of our front yard.

Anyone got a set of 22LR swagging and crimping dies?
