We used to catch cicadas and tie a black cat firecracker to them.

Light and release was the game.

There were no survivors.

As the proud owner of several hundred young fruit trees (which cicadias feed on) I'm thinking more along the lines of chemical/biological warfare.

When I was a kid I'd take out a BB gun and shoot them out of the trees around the home place. The chickens soon learned to watch for me coming out of the house with the gun and they would come running. Otherwise I'd come out to do something else and they would ignore me.

Me too. They can get loud, though. Cicadas and frogs always make me think of summers out of school camping in the woods.
