I fucking love this movie.

Great Cold War spy story. Gary Oldman was awesome. Perfectly methodical, experienced, mechanical mind. The scene where he replays his attempt to get Karla to flip was awesome. "Somehow I felt it was important to save the swine."

I'm sure a half dozen of you will be 'round shortly to tell me how much better the book was. Don't care, movie was awesome.

Pretty sure there are a bunch of books in that series. Do your research. I liked it too.

Man, I fell asleep in that movie. I guess my movie taste is not as refined as you high class rascals.

I found it droll and forgettable.

I love shit about the Cold War. Pretty much anything where the Russkies are the enemy is good with me. I'm a child of the 80's, raised by a member if SAC. I hate the Russians to this very day. Funny thing is they make such bloody good rifles the swines.

Same. The only memorable thing about the movie is the name.

The sound engineering killed it for me.  I really really wanted to like it, but I could barely understand what was going on because the audio was so muddled.

It's been on HBO lately.

I've tried watching it twice. Both times got bored within ten or twenty minutes and got up to do something else.

I remember seeing the book on my Dad's nightstand.  Next thing you know, I'm hooked on spy vs spy novels.

Life was so much simpler back then.

Never read the book (want to get around to it)

Fell asleep during the movie when I rented it from Redbox (I think I was hung over that day).

Meh.

I am to dumb to appreciate a movie like that.
Movies for me are mindless entertainment, explosions, gunfire, boobs, and mindless teenage humor. I tried to watch that movie but got bored and confused.
I that it would be more like munich I was dissappoint

There's hope for you yet.  Now watch The Russia House.

I tried to read the book.  Gave up on it about 1/4 of the way through so I'm not surprised the movie isn't that good.

Movie sucked, in my opinion.

If you want to see a great version of this story, get the 1970s BBC production with Alec Guinness as Smiley. Approximately 100x better than the recent film version.

It really saddens me when researching further that the CIA for nearly 30 years only had ONE FUCKEN full time agent assigned to Hungary and that was it meanwhile there was hundreds for other countries.....

I thought it was quite good.  You had to really pay attention, though.

Gary Oldman is fantastic as always.
Mark Strong is awesome.  (The teacher who killed the bird.)

It took 5 + hours to do the complete novel justice. And Alec Guinness owned that.  The only problem with it is the pre-1980 BBC audio/video production values which are downright painful to sit through 30+ years later.
The 2011 film does the story and some main characters justice but not the complete novel.

I'm a huge John le Carré fan.

I loved the book.

I loved the BBC miniseries.

I loved the 2011 film.  Gary Oldman owned that.

Of the three, the 2011 film would have been the hardest for anyone not familiar with the basic story and le Carré spy world to follow or enjoy.

I have seen it 3 times - It is a good movie.  Seeing those British agents betraying their own country always reminds me of Barry and his crowd.

the 1979 series with Alec Guiness was good.  You might enjoy Smiley's People also.
