Almost over the flu , been stuck at home bored since last Friday . Today was cage water change/spot cleaning day so i decided to get all the snakes out for some pics. the white grid shelf is 1 inch squares. I keep the snake room at 77F and 65% humidity, for the cages the cool side is 74f , warm side is 92f. i have 7 boas and 2 pythons , 5 are hog islands boas and 2 are morphs and 2 are childrens pythons. they are doing so good , super healthy and look great and all of them are easy to handle with no fuss. everyone is fed moderately , mostly according to info from the Rio bravo website , all eat frozen thawed mice and rats. they sell for about 250$ each , i will eventually breed many of these pairs but really it just pays for the hobby. they can live for 15 to 30 years so require quite a commitment of time and cost for caging. For you weenie snake haters , educate yourselves.

First up is my male 2013 CA x Hypo het albino.

This is my female 2013 CA Hypo X hog island.

This one is part if a unrelated trio i got from Gus at Rio Bravo , this is the 2012 female hog island.

This is also part of the Rio Bravo trio , 2012 male hog island as a pair with above. He actually started some breeding behavior this month .

This is also part of the Rio Bravo trio , she is a 2011 female hog island.

This guy was my 1st boa , a 2010 hog island from desert moon reptiles. He is getting big , almost 5 ft. He used to fit in my hand when i first got him , he is my favorite!

This is my 2008 hog island female , she was a rescue left at a pet shop front door full of mites , mean and skinny too. Many months later she is a big baby and in top shape about 6 ft now and 17lbs.

This is a female 2013 childrens python , she is doing very well . She is part of a pair , the male is below.

This is a male 2013 childrens python , he almost didnt make it , as he was the last male left and wasn't eating much but now he does and is doing very well well.

here is a shot of the 6 foot cat tower , where they hang out a lot of the time.

hope you enjoyed the pics , taken with a Samsung point and shoot.

this guy makes the best cages http://www.constrictorsnw.com/cagessupply/plmodularcages.html, add a digital thermostat like a herpstat 2 and a radiant heat panel and floor based heat pad , some aspen , water bowl and 2 hides and you are good to go. The rainbows are beautiful , but unpredictable and can be nippy , plus need very high humidity thus mold and lots of cleaning/hassle. Find a nice hog island boa or island boa, they stay  small like 4 to 7 feet and very passive so easy to handle. I keep the adults in 4x2x2 or 6x2x2 cages .

The childrens pythons are kind if hard to find but stay 3 to 4 feet and not aggressive at all so perfect pet type snakes.

Thanks!

I worked at a glass wholesaler years ago and built a pantload of tanks...

I've had boas, retic's & ball pythons over the years.

It looks like an interesting hobby.

Out local news had a story about a guy who got busted smuggling in a snake.

What do these things sell for?

yep that guy is known on the reptiles sites, he really did some shady stuff involving some smuggling from a zoo in brazil i believe, he will be doing some time before its all over  that snakes babies sold for $20k to 40k  due to rarity but on avrg boas go for 100$ for normal ones to $6000 or more for rare morphs.

Nice looking critters.  After my Mandarin ratsnake kicked the bucket about a year ago, I am down to one pet snake, a Mexican hognose.  One is enough for me.

I used to keep a lot more, including venomous ones, but it just got to be too much work.

they do have some nice teeth on them , the big girl got me once when i had touched a rat and forgot to wash my hands and she nailed me .

you get the idea

they mostly stay small , under 6 feet but some can get really big for just a boa. people by a 50$ snake and dont know what they have , then 4 years later its like this .  (not my snakes)   Not that thats wrong , but you have to be prepared and educated on how to keep such a big one.

Some of the first photos seem to show that the snake's pigment darkens from front to back.  Is that normal?

yep the hog islands and some other types can change their shades a bit to absorb more heat from the sun , especially in the evening when the sun is setting they will get darker.

they will chill on the cat tower for hours, or if im watching a movie they will sit in my lap and get warm and fall asleep actually. same if i lay in bed a read a book , they coil up and get warm . I will let them sit on a shoulder but have to keep them from around the neck , they will chill on one spot for hours if  I'm on the PC surfing. they do know im the food giver and my smell , they are more comfortable around me then strangers . they are very inquisitive and will seek me out to see what im doing or if i have food, even from other rooms. they are not aggressive at all unless you hurt them. Take years for them to get to know you so well, younger ones dont do that.
