That doesn't appear to be .500S&W.

.45/70 perhaps.

it was a winchester 71 heavily customized. caliber 50 alaskan. I know the owner who posted that, he said that harold johnson was the creator. He also had another winchester 71 in 50 alaskan customized by wild west guns. I got to fire both, very mild due to the weight. more of a big push instead magnum kick.

You can get a Browning 71, and have it rebored for about $1200.

I'm on the lookout for one right now, but I'll probably make it a 50-110.

Worth the price in my book but I'm pretty sure the dying transmission in my car would object.

I wouldnt call it redneck. it had some of the nicest fabrication work I have ever seen. That  forecap with heavy winged sights was sweet. Also the lever was butter smooth, the smith did excellent work.

Hrmmm..... .45/70 out of my modern Marlin 1895 are moving substantially faster than that chart.

Agreed.  And if you go to a ruger no. 1, you can get almost identical numbers for the 50 Alaskan.

You misunderstand my point even though I said I liked it.  I was speaking to the concept of the rifle not the quality of the work.

50 Alaskan was a cartridge developed by Wild West Guns out of Anchorage Alaska. They typically offer it in their guide guns built on the Marlin 1895 platform along with their 457 magnum cartridge. I used to work their and build guide rifles for them. State troopers had 3 .50 Alaskans built as anti vehicle guns for their swat team for engine blocks back in 2001.

Nice aperture sight and it would make a great brush gun for deer in areas where rifle calibers are prohibited.

Would have a nice low profile self-defense application as well.

Out of my 1895?... never tried as it is a laser with 405gr loads (both cast and jacketed), but I would wager if one could, speeds would be low.
I can push 500gr loads at good speed out of my Bakail double rifle or Ruger No1 as mentioned though.

Yeh i was thinkin the same thing. I push a 425gr hard cast out at about 1800 fps and it will go thru damn near anything.  Same recipe I used killed two Cape Buffaloa with one shot in Africa......yeh thats where they keep the CB. ...HAHA

This is correct, the initial guns used 50 calibre machine gun barrels which were the correct .510 bore and BTW Wild West Guns claim a lot of things.

I came up with some actual data (chronographed) for the 50 Alaskan if anyone is interested, the gun used is a 22" gun using a 525 cast bullet the data suggests this should run 1850-1860 fps loaded, 3 grains under maximun it is chornographed at 1810 fps which is plenty
as recoil is somewhat heavy. This gun shoots under an inch at 100 yards when scoped and generally wears iron sights as it is a Bear gun.
I am going to shoot this gun a week from tomorrow and will let you know just how bad it really is.

tagged for outcome...looks like "retinal detachment" recoil to me.
