It seems like you hardly ever hear anything about these, which is probably a good thing for a combat-type vehicle.

Does anyone have any experience with these?  It seems like they'd be handy as hell... what the up-armored HMMWV is supposed to be, but smaller and easier to get places than a Stryker.

I always thought they were pretty cool but people here who have crewed them said they sort of suck.  Cramped, tiny turret, hard to get into/out of in a hurry (or with gear on at all), and the usual noisy and hot.

Not a fan, just because they required more assets to recover and did not add additional firepower over a gun truck. The armor was a wash as the biggest threat was efp's Note we were running 1151's otherwise.

Love the turret..same thing as on the AAVs.

There was a thread about them a few days ago:  users weren't fond of them.

I remember Iraq circa 2004 there was one with an all female crew...much ado was made over that.

I loved them, but they should have been upgraded with new suspension, and the turret removed and replaced with a CROWS II, so essentially, the Canaidan TAPV. The turret is awful, using old a Bradley optics might ave saved costs but the lack of thermal and the horrible turret controls made quickly engaging targets quite difficult.

It just wouldn't be as fun without a Mk19 and M2 in the turret.

So it seems like the most prevalent complaints involve the turret.  How's the protection compared to something like a Stryker or Bradley?

Not a fair comparison as they are not in the same class of vehicles. The ASV was designed to provide the Military Police Corps with a useful convoy security vehicle, it does that, it's not an APC or an IFV.

The only people I ever saw driving them were fisters or some other sort of FA/FO capacity. They look pretty fun to drive, but I wouldn't want to have to PMCS it each week.

You likely did not see an ASV then, but more likely the M1200 Armored Knight FO vehicle.

ASVs are uncomfortable as fuck to sit in for 14 hours, I'll say that

oh and we had two of them catch on fire because of something to do with the brakes, and also had an engine flame out which was kind of funny becuase the truck behind it thought it got blown up.

ASV evolved, this is what it should be. The Canadian TAPV. More armor, better suspension and mobility, and a CROWS with an AGL and a coaxial FN MAG.

I gunned in one for several months.

I loved it, but I am a small guy who fit well in the turret. Hell of a lot more comfortable than the webbing strap of a seat for a HMMWV turret I had.

I did have to pop the hatch and clear traffic away from us with the 9mm a few times, and there may have been a few vehicles that accidentally got ran over after they wouldn't get the fuck away from us.

I /love/ the ASV.

Its a fun vehicle, but people get all butthurt because it can't survive massive IEDs, which it was never designed to. This was put in service in 1999ish to give MOs something to do Kosovo style missions, and then they Army only bought 99 of them to shut up the MPs. Then Iraq kicks off and all of a sudden ewe are buying thousands of them as a stop gap till we can get enough up armored HMMWVs and MRAPs.

i hate ASVs cramped no room and why the fuck do i have to pull up the floor and use a bilge pump to remove water... if water can get in the pressure of a IED would blow it apart... we were not allowed to use them in Kandahar. My unit has 4 of them and they suck

It's not a tank. I don't know why people expected them to be.

I had an ASV in my MP squad in Iraq and it came in handy.

The front was great for ramming in metal doors, I had a driver who could pop open a locked door like an artist.

They also were good for towing broken down uparmoured humvees, which happened a lot.

But by the time the Iraq war came around it was seriously obsolete:  No V shaped hull to deflect IED's, no back ramp
and a turret to take up more interior room. With powere traverse and manual elevation.  And the driver and TC were basically wedged in the front and could barely move.

Maintenance was never an issue with mine, but I had a good one.
