Since getting a CNC machine I can't stop playing around with ideas and projects.

One thing I want to do is create a custom front sight and gasblock similar to the below one but with my custom mods.

I'm trying to decide if I trust 6061 or 7075 to maintain the ruggedness of the Ak platform.

What steels should I consider.

An Al gas block....errrrr....no

no aluminum, coefficient of thermal expansion too far off.

almost any plain or alloy steel will work, 1030, 1040, 4140, 4340, avoid stainless, same problem as above.

Nope. Kalashnikov's original design/materials seems to function just fine in most "developing" nations; why fix what ain't broke?

You could run into a variety of unintended consequences by changing the materials around.

Still belongs in a trash can, regardless of build quality

No, If you are not going to use steel on steel then try a material that has the same thermal expansion rate as the steel.  Otherwise, the differential thermal expansion will cause seal problems.

When searching for steel, I first looked for 4140 .etc but I'm having a hard time finding decent priced stock. Meanwhile 1018 is everywhere.

Would 1018 be a better choice? I'd prefer to use something that doesn't require post hardening.

It isn't that 1018 doesn't "require" hardening so much as it's too low carbon to harden.  1018 is sufficient for a gas block.  4140 is superior in any state.

I'm gonna keep looking for 4140, for now I'll play around with 1018.

Recommend any books on steel types and relation to firearms?

Just wondering wandering if I can feel comfortable with 1018 or if I should stick solely to something like 4140.

You have something against research?

There are many aluminum barrel mounted products on the market for many firearms, I do things right, which means asking questions getting books and doing research, not just accepting what other people use because its the cheapest.

There's always that Pocket Reference Guide (little black book) they sell at most home improvement/other handy stores. If I recall correctly it should have sections with tables of metals and alloys and uses/qualities/thermal expansion rates thereof. No idea about firearms-specific metals books though, sorry.
