For what?

The Ruger Vaquero is the most used pistol in Cowboy Action Shooting because it is tough as shit.  .38 is more popular because it is cheaper to shoot.  If you want something more authentic, get one in .45 Colt.

cap-and-ball:  LeMat

cartridge: Colt SAA in 45LC

If you want a LeMat, I think Cabellas has a repro they sell exclusively.  For a SAA, go with an Uberti.

I have the original pair of Old Model Vaqueros in .45 that I started CAS with and two pair of SASS Vaqueros in .357

If you want a replica of a Colt SAA, check out Taylor's

Colt 1911.  It was in the movie McKlintock, so it's a cowboy gun.

I wanted a USFA SAA Custer battlefield edition but never got one before they quit making real guns for those stupid little zip guns.
One was listed on gunbroker recently, and maybe its good I didn't ever get one because the finish is not what I saw advertised, which was a distressed metal finish to make it look like 100 year old blued worn away and lightly pitted.   It still looks nice but no different than new.

I am waiting for a 7-1/2" Colt SAA in 45colt.
I also saw a traditions SAA copy at the NRA exhibits.  It had a nice distressed finish, especially for the far lower price than what a colt or collector USFA one would sell for.

Single action revolvers ?

Ruger Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks .....I've had a dozen different models over the years . The 3-screws triggers are lovely

I still have my 44mag , the first one I ever owned , and would love to have another 45 3-screw someday , jus cuz

Vaqueros if you are going to shoot in SASS , while the USFA Colt SAA replicas  are some of the most beautiful models to have as safe queens and occasional shooters .

Cimeron used to sell a slightly higher quality Uberti.  Newer Rugers have a smaller frame (more correct) than older ones.  I don't know where Beretta falls into play.

Do you hand load? I wouldn't even want to buy ammo to feed a 357 at factory ammo prices, 45 Colt would be even worse. That would also influence my decision, if you hand load I'd rather have an old Vaquero over the new smaller framed Vaquero.

New Model #3 FRONTIER in .45LC

I have two, in Five inch - previous models made by Uberti/Beretta "LARAMIE"s

Reloading is a breeze, cleaning is a breeze and they fit the hand and look cooler.

That's a good choice.  I got my Vaqueros in 45 Colt, but I reload and cast bullets for 'em.  The Rugers are good heavy use guns.  If I were doing it for just the look and feel of the gun, I'd get reproductions of the Colt 72 open top or Richards Mason Conversion.

Just for fun? I say Black Powder reproduction. I have a single one - Pietta copy of an 1860 Colt in .44.  It's so much fun to shoot that I started casting round ball to feed it.

Colt 3rd Generation .45 Colt

For use I load it either with BP, or "Cowboy" type loads with low recoil.

If I were to have a gun for action shooting on a regular basis, I'd look into a Ruger Vaquero in the same caliber.
