Duck bill.
Beaver tail.
Otter webbed feet and legs.
Lays eggs.
Has fur.
Males have a poisonous spur on their leg.
Females make milk but lack teets.

What kind of freak of nature are these things??

"...the severe pain was persistent and did not respond to morphine."
They had to do a nerve block up in his shoulder on the main nerve to kill the pain.

From first hand accounts the pain is best described as being burned alive for like two days straight.

And the Porcupine, for that matter.

I appreciate the effort, but that was much less informative than I had hoped. (Yeah I know, I'm too stupid, uneducated, etc)
I think I was hoping to find something more like this, except for the Platypus:

I probably asked for the wrong thing.

I figured that what you meant but unfortunately you don't see trees like that for many species other than humans.

The last one is probably the most interesting, because it shows how among mammals it's the platypus (and echnids), and everything else.  They branched off REALLY early.

http://www.theguardian.com/science/2008/may/08/genetics.wildlife

The creature, considered one of the strangest mammals in the world, has become the latest to have its genetic code sequenced, revealing it to be a bizarre mix of mammal, bird and reptile, with very complex sexuality. While humans have two sex chromosomes, the X and Y, the platypus has 10, with five of each kind.

From what I remember from a show 10+ years ago: The venom mimics the neurotransmitter for pain, so getting injected with it is essentially getting injected with pure pain.

Its so painful, you can die of shock alone....or so I seem to remember.

When the system selects the best survivor from random mutations you are going to end up with a couple oddballs.  In other words if it's a stupid plan but it works, it's not stupid.

When the platypus was described to science at first they thought it was a hoax. Rather like a Fiji Mermaid which was produced by a taxidermist with a Monkey and a Fish.
