Anyone know how Beau Biden won his Bronze Star? My Google must be broken.
|
|
Bronze stars are handed out frequently for officers who never stepped foot off a FOB.
meanwhile, a SPC who saves his squad and 1SG by mounting a m-2 under fire and kills a suicide bomber and his suicide bomber buddies gets an ARCOM- go figure. ETA: Medal Gate. |
|
He earned his bronze star by serving honorably in a war zone as a leader, just like me and thousands of other Soldiers.
Typically, all officers and Senior NCOs earn a bronze star for a deployment. The approval authority is a 2 star general, with 2ish years of experience. Also, there is a huge difference between a bronze star (an administrative wartime medal dating bck to WW2) and a bronze star for Valor. |

Meritorious Service = Meritorious Service Medal
Meritorious Service in a war zone = Bronze Star Meritorious Service while conducting combat operations (or Valorous Service) = Bronze Star with V device |

Heroic use of a stapler and combat related paper cuts from legal documents as a JAG officer. |

He survived a shotgun blast through the door after a warning shot off the balcony.

So, in this thread it's cool to disparage a dead Soldier because of his father's political beliefs? (No one would give a shit about him if not for his father)
Pretty bad ass. |

Beau Biden was a lawyer. The Army gave out well over 150,000 bronze stars. He got one of them.

Significantly less per capita, we also give MSMs in combat zones to attempt to link the BSM more as a combat award. Generally they will give a BN commander and maybe his 3 a BSM while the staff officer in the RCT staff will get MSMs unless they actually out in the fight leading combat ops. |

POG's frequently earn medals based on who they know & not whether or not it is earned or warranted.
Look at the one who got an ARCOM for trolling people on Facebook. |

Sadly, I'm no longer surprised by these disgraces committed by our government. Who is "our government"? Why the United States Federal government, who ultimately includes our military. They make the military do some rather idiotic things; conversely, our military often manages to do many idiotic things all on its own. Do you support giving out that many bronze stars? Or do you think the standard to earn one ought to be higher (a lot higher) than it appears to be right now? |

So it's a participation medal then ?
Just like the soccer trophies ? Did he get an orange slice and a juice box too ? |

After being in Afghanistan for almost 14 years and Iraq for over 8, how many millions of service members do you think took part? Over 2,000,000 boots on ground over the duration of those two wars, and there are still guys in both places. 150k isn't that many. |

Since pragmatically the only options are BSM and ARCOM, I support recognizing leaders with a higher award.
As I stated before on this forum battalion, brigade, and division level leaders should establish a culture of distinguishing higher performance from groups of peers. IE your top 50% of company commanders earn a BSM, while the rest get arcoms. Go up and down the ranks adjusting as you see fit. Problem is, who wants to be the first commander to change? You end up with 1 battalion with 50% fewer awards than every other battalion. So now your guys are looked at like dirtbags when they PCS. As FDC illustrated, it's largely an Army issue, not a vast representation of a corrupt government. |

There was this Colonel see, and he really really really wanted to be a General right. So he realizes Joe Biden's kid is in his command and he says to himself, "Self, go ahead and write that Biden feller up for an award, make sure his old man finds out who wrote it- and what you got is a First Class, E ticket to that star,"
No different from any other kid with a sugar daddy. |

Giving them out to everyone just cheapens the award. So what exactly did Beau do to earn it? Because I can't find anything other than flying to DC for 0bama's inauguration & touring Camp Victory with his daddy. Oh, and he was working as Delaware's Attorney General while he was deployed. |

Giving them out to everyone? That is literally the Genesis of the award. Every CIB holder in WW2 earned one at the end of the war. Per the AR: The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the Army of the United States after 6 December 1941, distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy; or while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. |

Didn't like him much as a kid, and certainly didn't like his politics, but brain cancer for someone his age - for anyone actually - is tragic. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Dancing on the grave is one thing, but poking fun at the political life of a politician is another. IMHO, his military record was part of his political life, and that is fair game. Beau knew early on he had a future in politics because of his dad, and he spent a large part of his life grooming for the next political step, so IMHO I doubt military service was anything more to him than a box he knew he had to check off to help him get to the next level of politics. Service to the country? I doubt it - more like political positioning for himself. Hunter did the same thing, but Hunter didn't have the political aspirations Beau did, so after he got kicked out for cocaine, he went to work capitalizing on access to his father. Beau wanted to be his father. |
