As others said, he's always been interesting because he's never "Gary Oldman plays Gary Oldman in _________" like so many others. That's not saying that those actors aren't great in other ways but Oldman is like those body-paint cammo pictures. *Later on* you realize that it was him playing that role.

I really loved Gary Oldman in Immortal Beloved. Obviously the music is great, but the way he portrayed a tortured Beethoven was just as good.
