Is their a connection between the Vietnam era trucks and Iraq era?

Why yes there is.........

During the Vietnam War, transportation units were forced to improvise their own protection for truck convoys. They eventually built a number of "gun trucks" with a variety of weapons fitted. Only one of these vehicles returned to the US after the war. It was named "Eve of Destruction" after the protest song.

Flash forward to the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Army convoys found themselves in similar circumstances, leading to jury-rigged "hillbilly armor" and ultimately to up-armored Humvees and MRAPs, but in the interim, the DOD asked different agencies to come up with short-term solutions. A scientist from the Livermore Labs came to the Army Transportation Museum to study "Eve of Destruction". His research led to the introduction of what is known as the Livermore Truck.

Its kinda sad thinking that only one of the Vietnam era gun trucks survives.

A short drive from my house a salvage yard is scrapping 5 -tons from Riley.
A number of them that have come through were gun trucks....don't know if
any came back from Iraq......but even so its kinda sad seeing them cut up.

Kinda curious as to why dont any of these have any armor covering the wheels? Seems like a fairly large weakpoint.

Gun trucks piss me off in a way. My company builds parts for a number of the trucks pictured. We built MATV parts. We've built armor kits, and turret swivels, and all kinds of things. If some unit wanted to up-armor something like a HEMTT rather than cobbing something together in the field a unit could tell us what they wanted and we could have put a kit together that would literally bolt on for nothing like the expense that standard channels would normally charge. But that's not how it works, so you end up with doing what you can with what you got.

They are fucking cool though

Older School

As an addition to the battalion's defense, HQ Co. of the 5th Armd Maint Bn developed an idea thought up by Ordinance Sgt. Magazine.

The 37mm gun is the only field weapon allotted for the battalion's defense.

To increase firepower, a 50 cal. Machine gun was mounted on the front of the 37mm gun vehicle. All parts were made and mounted by HQ personnel.
