I keep saying North Korea. The Norks have a bunch of cities they built with nobody living in them. We just need to get all three flavors of socialism to work together. Like Neapolitan ice cream. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

One of the many beauties of the English language is that ( thanks to invasions by Norsemen, Anglo-Saxons, Romans and Normans ) we frequently have multiple words for the same or similar thing that have origins in Romance or Germanic languages. Wife/Spouse Yet, somehow, very few of the original British inhabitant's words survived. I love English!!!!!! |

Pagan and Heathen are synonyms. They are not direct replacements for each other. Norse people are heathens. Romans are pagans. lol. both heathen (heath = moor = british countryside) and pagan (latin for countryside) denote land-based religions like animism and shamanism. the two terms are functionally synonymous, except that the latter has been co-opted by contemporary movements as a positive umbrella term for nature religions, while the former is always a christian pejorative. |

As I mentioned, both words ironically mean "redneck" (more literally, one who lives in the country). Go up to a Norse heathen in 710AD and call him a Pagan. He'll look at you funny, promptly rob you, then walk away wondering just what your gibberish meant. Call him a Heathen, and he'll beat the living shit out of you for calling him a backbirth, then promptly rob you, then walk away laughing his ass off. There is a subtle, but very crucial difference between the two. Both words are tied to specific lands and people. |

People were called rednecks, er, heathens long before the catholic church decided to make it a term for the backward hillfolk who weren't properly practicing Christianity. Pagan as a term for hillfolk of backwards religion predates the Christianization of Rome and was applied by the Romans to country people who worshipped pre-Roman faiths despite Roman occupation of their lands. The word was also associated with "sloppy soldier" or "poor warrior". Perhaps you should read up on the history of the words a bit more? |

“Every country has chosen its own course within the refugee area.
