I found this and instantly thought of a thread awhile back asking about towns of inbred a hidden in the Appalachians. It's not the Appalachians though, it's Australia, guess the sheep weren't enough.

I knew a place, it was known as Meat Camp by the locals. It was about 30 miles outside Boone, NC . I lived near there for awhile, it was at the end of a winding logging road about 10 miles long. At night we heard screaming, V8..motors and lots of shooting. I asked a local deputy about it, he was like ate u crazy we don't go near there...

Some of my relatives were "in bred" on the Missouri side. Story I heard was that whenever the birth defect rate got too bad they would blame it on "the river" and move upstream. Apparently this would get some new blood into the mix and fix things for a while, but darned if "the river" didn't eventually start acting up again and the whole group would repeat the process. I'm sure this story answers a lot of your questions.
