Interstate 77 southbound was closed for hours at the Morehead Street exit Friday morning after a tractor-trailer wrecked and spilled 50,000 pounds of potatoes.

The driver told troopers he fell asleep, said John Burgin of the State Highway Patrol.

The driver, who is from Utah, said he’d heard of truckers being arrested in North Carolina for pulling roadside to sleep. So he decided to try to make it through the state, he told troopers who responded to the wreck, Burgin said.
The truck hit a barrier wall and overturned about 2 a.m. near John Belk Freeway, I-277, exit 9.

The truck was destroyed, Burgin said, although the driver had few if any injuries.

Fuel spilled onto the interstate and onto most of the potatoes, Burgin said. The damaged potatoes were scheduled to be disposed of at Waste Connections in Wadesboro, he said.

Cleanup crews at the scene said a few hundred pounds of potatoes had fallen into grass near an exit ramp, were not contaminated and would be donated to a food gleaning group.

Traffic backed up to the Brookshire Freeway exit. One lane finally reopened shortly before 8 a.m. and a second lane about 8:30 a.m.

The driver will likely be charged with a minor traffic offense, such as failure to maintain control of a vehicle, that can be paid off through the mail, Burgin said.

Hope they clean it up before they rot.  The starch and protein will smell like rotten animal(meat)/sewer after awhile  Also will rust metal on yer vehicles.  I could think of better things to run over.

That is a very big assumption.

Think of how many people think they know gun laws, like how no one can own a machinegun or a silencer like hit men use on TV.

NC troopers ordered to catch truckers napping

Sleepy truck drivers who park for naps alongside interstate on-ramps can expect rude awakenings this summer from state troopers under orders to enforce an overlooked no-parking law.
The first wake-up message was delivered in a May 26 “attention all truckers” memo from the Highway Patrol that focused on Interstate 77 in the western Piedmont. It spelled out a stern prohibition against parking on the shoulders, exit ramps and on-ramps of interstate highways and rest areas, and at weigh stations after hours.

This is some retarded shit(although honestly many ramps aren't wide enough to park on, and you don't want to be parking a semi on an unpaved shoulder as they tend to start sinking and either get stuck or even flip over - yes, it happens often). And now we have a verifiable incident that can be linked directly to it.

On a related note, Florida actually has signs up suggesting to truckers that they pull into the weigh stations if they need to park for a while. Which is probably a good thing since they don't have enough truck stops. But I still wonder how many people avoid doing so, since so many states(especially on the east coast) are so insane about fucking with truckers for no reason...

Great Thinking there guys.......lets just keep the roads and highways filled with drowsy truckers driving 65-70 mph 80,000 lb missiles  .  That should work out reeeeal well when they come up on congested traffic.

Morons.

So truck drivers can't be lazy and they actually have to park in a spot?

LOL guess they'll have to find somewhere else to toss their piss juggs.
