By making him black they have to change large components of another character. Detta Walker hates Roland and Eddie because they were "Honky Mahfahs". A black man is not a honky. Changing Detta to a white racist using another word won't work either, as I highly doubt in this day of BLM it will be allowed on screen. |

Cliff's notes for those who didn't read the series:
The story starts (and ends) with a great line. In between, there are a few good fantasy and adventure elements, surrounded by a lot of drivel about New York being the center of the universe. And lots of story written from the POV of an angry black woman. And the mythical "dark tower' that looms over the whole story for 5 or 6 books... basically turns out to be nothing at all. So the producers of this movie really wouldn't have to stoop too low to fuck up the story. |

I'd say the same thing if Roland was described as being as dark black as the man from Togo I was at Basic Training with and being changed to white for the movie. A white man isn't black, a black man isn't white. Changing the story to try and make it fit film better is one thing, changing the main character's race is nothing but SJW crap at work. If BLM people can be pissed about a white man playing Michael Jackson in the upcoming movie DT fans can be pissed about this. Equality goes both ways, that's why it's EQUALity. |

I loved this casting from day one. Not so sure about McConaughey though but regardless I have been waiting a long time for this.

I'd buy into a black Jesus before a black Roland.
Roland being white is as integral to the story as Odetta being black. Finding her center between the 2 extremes she lived in is a major part of the story. I expect this to be a lot like Starship Troopers. A decent movie bearing no resemblance to the original story. |

Elba is awesome in everything he does. The movie might suck donkey balls, but I bet he nails the role.

Many of King's works have a "racial tension" aspect, and I would prefer it if Hollywood stuck to the story as King wrote it. It's like the movie Dune, where they invented the "weirding module" weapons for the movie. It was interesting how they did it, but there was no need for it. |
