I have every part that I need to build either of these other than the barrels.

The commando will use a lower that I am about to SBR, the M16A2 will use an extra lower that I have and I will build a modern upper for the SBR.

This is not an 11.5" vs 20" thread as I will have an SBR anyway.

The question is, do I build a second SBR upper using the A2 receiver, or do I just have the one SBR upper and build an A2 clone?

"Get both" is not an option, I don't even have the money for either one right now but I'm planning ahead.

How about a different version of "Get Both"?  Build a Dissapator and have the best of both the A2 (the long handguards and sight radius) and the 16" barrel of the Commando.

20". It's a dying breed and still cool as hell.

I'm one of those weird cloner guys.

As cool as that would be, it wouldn't be correct.

I started a 20" retro like 3 years ago and still haven't finished it.

Go Commando.

Build an A1 commando with a pencil barrel instead of the A2.  If you're gonna go short and light you might as well do it the right way

M16A2

Muskets are still cool. And I love mine.

This right here.

I would do the latter, build a "modern" SBR upper and an A2, you'll have a more well rounded set of firearms.

You can always put together a 11.5" upper in the future, the ease of swapping uppers is a major benefit of SBRed ARs.

A2 Commando. The A2 upper works pretty well on an SBR; I'd want to do an A4 clone if I was going to do a 20" rifle. YMMV.
