This little guy was born on our families farm. He was stepped on by a cow and almost died. He got a respiratory infection with the goopy eyes and he almost bought the farm again. We brought him home and nursed him with some powdered tetracycline and lots of love. 6 days and he has a bit of a belly and he is playing happily.

This little guy just hit the jackpot because he will get to live in our home for the rest of his days.

Has a vet checked him out yet? We rescued a stray cat that had a belly too, except she was full of worms. There really is no such thing as a "free" pet

In the neighborhood where my best friend grew up, there was a big tomcat with 6 claws on both front paws. He was Boss on that street, even the dogs would avoid him.

Polydactyl cat

A polydactyl cat is a cat with a congenital physical anomaly called polydactyly (or polydactylism, also known as hyperdactyly), that causes the cat to be born with more than the usual number of toes on one or more of its paws. Cats with this genetically inherited trait are most commonly found along the East Coast of North America (in the United States and Canada) and in South West England and Wales.

I've got a 6 year old male with seven on each front paw and five on each back paw.  The only problem is that he can't clean the claw between his regular four claws and the 'thumb'.

It is a pain to trim that one every couple of weeks.

His mother has a double claw on one of her front paws (another in the litter has the same thing) and a thumb on the other paw.

Good work, OP.  I just got a new one too.  Found abandoned and starving along an irrigation canal by a friend, weighed about half a pound at far older than he should have weighed half a pound at.  He's now chubbing up nicely and playing with the other boys, although the Maine Coon outweighs him by a factor of 20.  LOL.  He's fearless and keeps coming back for more though!

Thanks for going that extra mile to be kind to an animal.

They said they have no idea how he survived. He was in something like a coma for 3 days before he started moving again. They put him in with a nursing mother and she cared for him. Not much they could do for him on the farm.

He is getting his meow back too! It's so soft that his purr seems louder.

If you ever get to Key West, visit the Hemingway House museum. They've got a colony of cats descended from cats that Ernest Hemingway had. Over half of them are polydactyl.

Huh

Never knew it was an east coast thing

I was told polydactyl cats were the result of inbreeding. That seems unlikely if it's a geographical anomaly. Then again.......
