Speaking on the effectiveness of the .30 Cal Carbine round, a good Mini-14 is more all-round effective a firearm than any M1 Carbine.
This is all about a collector bubble, and has little to do with the overall effectiveness of the M1 Carbine. It's not that wonderful a firearm, really.
Collectible, for sure. Effective with FMJ Ball ammo? Reasonable within very short ranges. Effective with hunting rounds, very much so at close ranges.
Mag release swap-out if you want to use 30-rd mags reliably, and mag springs for sure. in every Carbine mag you own.
All in all, I'll take a good Mini-14 over a .30 Carbine any day, as a defense forearm that might have to hit effectively at up to middlin' ranges.
The M1 Carbine is at best, using the very best reloads, a decent short-range weapon. As originally configured, it has no provision for optics or any sort or night sights.
Adding optics IMHO requires a Scout-style mount, as all the aftermarket conventional scope mounts intended for the M1 Carbine universally suck, in my experience.
The only regret I have in selling off my DCM Inland (at a very nice price is that I have over 2K match-grade handloads in .30 Carbine that I can't shoot. And, NO, I won't sell them to you. Sorry.
Maybe I'll find a .30 cal Ruger pistol some day. Or maybe I'll just take down the rounds and sell the components.
I don't miss the M1 Carbine one little bit. My ARs and my Mini-14 will out-do it any day of the week.

Considering it was designed as a replacement for the M1911A1 for behind the line support troops, it seemed to do well enough that it made it's way to the front lines, especially after the M2 upgrade. 1/2 the weight of a Garand, muzzle energy of a .357 magnum, better aiming characteristics then a handgun with longer range, it did well enough that millions and millions were made.
With the proper SP ammo, it'll knock a deer down with fast follow up shots to boot if needed.
