CNN like most other cable channels can survive because satellite and cable companies bundle programming. If content that you buy were ala cart a lot of these broadcasters would simply disappear. I believe consumer choice is around the corner because the advent of faster broadband service being offered in more places in the country and breaks the monopolies of (mostly cable companies) for pay content providers. With products like roku, boxxie box, fire stick and such will allow consumers to pick and choose who thy want entertainment and news from directly from the companies that provide programming they want and not get what they don't. I believe in less than ten years broadcasting companies that are considered giants now will be either much smaller or one all together and smaller more regional companies will pop up. All you need is a good nternet pipe and a camera and boom, you are a news broadcaster. |
