Just finished this on amazon streaming. I watched it when hbo made the series a few years back but figured I'd watch it again as I like ww2 shows.
Pretty damn good. If you have never seen it, it's worth watching. Now I need to find a new series to watch. |
I thought it was well done, but there's a lot of hate for it here.
Have you seen Generation Kill? |
Written by the guys who were actually there. It's not as polished as the other series that was written after the fact by someone who wasn't there.
With the old breed is excellent reading. |
There were parts which I liked but I was spoiled by the above and beyond superb production of Band of Brothers so I didn't have the same level of feeling for it. For one thing they kept switching from character to character and being pulled from theater to theater so we couldn't form an emotional bond with them the same way as we did BoB where everyone was fighting in Market Garden and everyone was being shelled in the Ardennes.
They should have just made it a series about Eugene Sledge and be done with it. Watching him turn from a 98 pound weakling to a grizzled killer to a nervous wreck would have been a masterpiece enough without the Australia thread from that other guy being thrown in. |
Yeah if you are looking for something to watch try Gen Kill if you haven't seen it yet.
Gen Mattis clip |

I watched it right after I saw Band of Brothers and was a little disappointed the first time around but when I watched the series over again I realized how good it is by itself. It's raw and doesn't hold back the horror of the Pacific theater. That was hell on Earth.

I didn't care for it, but that's probably because I read "With the Old Breed" before the series came out.
It is one of the few movies/shows that I own. Bought it on BluRay, too.

That was a really good flick. There was a scene where the jap bodies had piled up so high the sgt went and pulled some bodies down to clear a field of fire.
I had the privilege to escort a flight of WW2 vets to the WW2 memorial, on the flight home I was sitting next to a marine vet from the pacific campaign. We were making small talk about the last few days, and he steered the conversation to a fight his unit got into one night. I swear it sounded just like that scene. He said they had bodies piled so high one of the guys had to go pull some down so they could pile up more. He also said the belt fed stuff saved their lives more than once. |
I enjoyed it, I think BoB is much better due to the fact it doesn't jump around so much.
It was decent, no more. The series is an amalgamation of three different books. The story line didn't flow nearly as well as BOB.
It had its moments. One of the best ones is the shot where the amphibious tractors roll out of the front of the landing craft into the water, heading for the beach.

BoB was too sterile, like a '70s made for TV movie. Good but not convincing enough to draw me in.
Even the one guy's 'battle' with alcohol was sad in it's execution. No dramatic feel to it. |
Do yourself a favor and read, "Helmet for my Pillow" and "With the Old Breed".
While not a "series" but more of companion pieces, watch "Flags of Our Fathers", and then "Letters From Iwo Jima".
Same battle from different sides. Different motivations, different outcomes, same dedication to duty that defines a soldier. |

I normally rewatch BoB every December for some reason, and decided to give The Pacific another run through before BoB. While I still liked the Pacific, BoB just has the something extra that makes it much better.
I can't wait for The Mighty 8th to be finished.
I hope it's of as a high a quality as BoB and The Pacific were. |

Met the real RV Burgin recently. He was one of the characters in The Pacific and author of Islands of the Damned.
Nice man. So very old. He seemed tough as nails and fragile at the same time. Not worthy to be in the same building with a man like that. |

Has there been any recent news about The Mighty 8th? Last thing I've seen was the name change from Masters of the Air (the source material) to that. And that was a year or two ago.

Eugene Sledge was born very close to where I grew up. From time to time, I pass by Georgia Cottage where he lived. Very different looking than what was shown on the Pacific, and also has a Historic Place sign in front of it. I really looked forward to the Pacific because I knew it had a couple of home town men in it. BOB, imo, will go down as one of the greatest miniseries ever, so the Pacific, initially, didn't seem in the same class the first time I watched it. The second time I watched it, something clicked and I think way more of it every time I watch it. The scenes of Sledge's father finally giving him the medical ok to join, his father outside his room while he's having nightmares, and the scene where he broke down while bird hunting were powerful.

Yeah, I just finished watching The Pacific through again. I liked it much better the second time through than when it originally aired.

Just looked up the Mighty Eighth. Ill watch it when it comes out for sure...

The Pacific is based on the personal memoirs of two Marines. I own both series on DVD, and watch them once a year. |

Victory at Sea, a little dated but interesting
World at War Rat Patrol, for fun, may not be on Prime |
