I've got an itch for a new pump shotgun.
Which one and why would you choose that model? |
I like the safety location on the Mossberg.
I own several examples of both and I usually pick the Mossberg. |
Because when I was faced with that decision, I went with the 590. Mine has the Speedfeed stock, and the price was better.
YMMV. |
Unless the 870 is an older Police Model, I would go with the A1 in 18.5".
590. Safety is in a better place for me.
Plus they had exactly the configuration I wanted without trying to hunt down a non shit finish used police trade in. Mine is parkerized taken a beating, not a spot of corrosion. |
Does the Remington come with a bayonet lug? Fuck no it doesn't!
I like the 500 series because they are lighter and more affordable. I also like the tang safety.
I never cared for crossbolt safeties behind the trigger. That's JMO. ETA: My 590 holds 19 rounds. |

While the 870 gets more use due to it being a hunting gun (it was my first shotgun incidentally), I like the 590 better because of that safety and because it just looks cooler. |

I would like to hijack your thread and go Mariner vs Marine or any saltwater capable choice. http://14544-presscdn-0-64.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/6731609955_cf31afd0cf_b1.jpg View Quote One of dem next. |

590 because of the tang safety (ambi) user replaceable ejector and no staked in shell stops. Lifter adapter available for mini shells too.
I'd buy the 590A1 simply because I already have 870's and would want a different flavour.
Maybe because 590's its ejector is easily replaceable versus 870 pinned, but I've never seen one go down because of an ejector failure. Otherwise, 870 for its vast aftermarket of parts and accessories. |
590A1, because I've seen the solder holding the 870 barrel ring into the barrel break off while a guy at the range was shooting it.
dont have that picture uploaded, sorry |
The 590A1 has a bayonet lug.
How to KILL with a Bayonet! |
I know they're available online, but I have a deposit on a 590a1 through my LGS and even though it's been 2 weeks, they still haven't heard from their distributor when they'll be getting the shotgun in. I don't think it's the retailer either because out of curiosity, I asked around and the other stores in the area couldn't give me an ETA on getting one in.

The 590A1 is a much better gun than the 870 express. Remington QC has gone downhill in the last few decades. Their police line is still ok. I wouldn't buy either gun new though. There are always some good used riot guns for sale.
Summit Guns has some old 870 Police Magnums for sale on their front page. Don't forget to look at their riot gun page too. Also It was John Wayne and Southern Ohio Gun. Also you could wait for the Mossberg Shockwave. |
I prefer the Ithaca 37 over the 870 but since aftermarket is almost nonexistent for the Ithaca I also have an 870 Police.
870
The answer is always 870 Because I grew up shooting the 870 so much so that wood stocked 870s come up and shoulder like they were custom fit to me. No other shotgun does. Not even synthetic stocked 870s or wood stocked 1100/1187s. Those are close but not quite as good. |
Mossberg's safety is better and the always up lifter is easier to load quickly unless you're quad loading, in that case the lack of a ramp from the lifter makes it much trickier. Screw vs rivet on the ejector is another plus for Mossberg. I like the Mossberg's slide release lever location better. Finally, the easily removeable magazine tube is a plus to me.

I have a 590A1. I am about 6' tall. The thing feels really long compared to an 870 or 1200/1300.
Just saying. The 590A1is always by my side. |
I used to be a huge Remington guy but lately seeing what they are letting out I have to say 590A1 all the way.
I have owned both, at the same time. Both perfectly configured for fighting.
I have sold all my 870 fighting guns and now only own 1 fighting shotgun, the 590A1. As far as "which one", they are literally perfectly equal with one tiny difference: the tang mount safety on the 590A1 gives it the edge. I find tang mounts faster and easier to manipulate quickly, from both right and left side. I'm a lefty but shoot long guns equally well from either side and I have a hard time with the button safety on the Rem. cause I switch hands a lot, I have to remember which side I"m on to remember which way to press it. I also find it slightly awkward to manipulate. So I wind up just never using the safety on my 870's. The 590A1 I can work the safety very fast, and it works the same from either side. it also feels just *slightly* heavier built than the 870. Functionally it's probably not, but feels slightly "tougher". Totally subjective but having owned 2 of each in fighting configs, the Mossberg feels a little better built, but that safety was a clear differentiator for me. I'm out of the fighting shotgun game, I decided carbines work better for me so I am down to 1 fighting shotgun, the 590A1 I stole from a guy for 250 when he was trying to fund another project. |

These days remington sucks
Mossberg because bayonet. I love my 870 Marine Magnum though. |
590A1. The 870 is a great shotgun but I prefer the position of the safety and bolt release on the 590.
Mossberg 590 with the speed feed stock, but if the SHTF, I'll grab my Benelli M4!
590a1 is built well.
Bayonet. Remington is crap, why waste your money? |
20" 590A1, XS tritium front bead jb welded on, magpul furniture, singe point sling.
It's a pump shot gun. Not much to it but I like the way I have this thing set up. I sure don't baby it. Attached File |
500/590.
Better pump release location No loading lever to pinch your fingers Better safety location Those 3 alone seal the deal for me. I can't stand 870s at all...you have to move your hand up to hit the pump release, and I always pinch my fingers when I load them. |

Back in the day....
MSG was issued the 870P, and the M590 was just adopted. Brand new 870's were dropping like flies in the training cycle at Mare island. The 590's had minor issues after many cycles, and more Buck and Chill than is sane. The day the 870's got boxed up and sent to hell, was a good day. Just keeping shell stops staked in the 870's was a major PITA for the 2111's. 870's are damn good Fudd guns, and are solid when Remmie gives a shit. The problem is, Remmie hasn't given a good Goddamn for over 20 years, and the China copy 870's are better made in many aspects. Todays 870, is NOT the same as it was in the late 60's and 70's. Then there is the stupid safety...Remmie ignored south paws, and folks that have to wear gloves...or god forbid, actually use the thing outside of the Trap range. Mossberg got it right the first damn time. |
