Got this from my father in-law tonight. Story is his dad got it in a trade out west for some some turquoise stones as his dad went all over the country in the 60's and 70's as a rock hound. My father in-law was told it was African...that's all I got. Its about 67 1/4"in length. A iron/steel top point that is 33 1/2" long and a bottom iron/steel bottom point that is 16"long, Wood in the middle and thin metal banding (wrapped) top and bottom of the center wood piece that protrudes out.

Any ideas of what this thing is and approximate age?

Could you imagine having one shot at something like a rhino and chucking this spear at it?

Looks like it could be a Maasai spear to me.

I'd guess it's for throwing. Maybe similar to roman spears (if not actually that) that would break off so they couldn't be used against them.

Without a doubt Maasai. I have spent a lot of time in East Africa, lots in Kenya, and have a few spear heads just like that. That shape is distinctive.

Back looks like it's made to be thrown with one of the wooden throwers. My recollection is that they were about 2' long with a little hollowed out section at the back that the spear fit into

That's akin to saving the last bullet for yourself
Probably should just run it thru yourself instead of pissing off the rino and having him curb stomp you

I was going to post this.  My grandfather has a Maasai spear from Kenya that looks similar.

Certainly African, but I would hesitate to apply it to a specific group.  Large numbers were made as trade items.

That does appear to be a particularly good looking one.  $200+ easily, when many can be had for half that.  Retail would want $400.

Thanks for the info thus far. I spent some time searching around online last night before I posted here...my head was spinning trying to narrow it down.

It does appear to be well built and old...that's about all I got.

looks just like my Massai spear my dad picked up in Tanzania for me when I was a kid! Yours looks way older though. Age.... not sure. the wood would be the best way to figure that out. They're ancient in design, but the Massai still make (and hunt with) them to date, so there's really no telling.

In the Massai tradition, a boy must go out with his spear and kill a lion in order to become a man/ warrior.

Mine is one of my favorite pieces I own, and it is the piece I own that inspired me to pick up an indigenous bladed weapon wherever I go.

It's African.  Dad has a couple like this type that he picked up in Markets in North Africa when he was in Navy.

no. the back is a sharpened spike. They throw them by hand. It's effective enough to kill lions that are trying to prey on their goat and cattle herds.
