I just started learning about mescal and I'm enjoying sipping the couple brands that they carry at the cigar bar I hang out at.

I want to take a bottle of good stuff to a friend of mine I'm visiting this weekend.

Please let me know something good that isn't over priced.

I had the absolute worst drunk I've ever been on around 1996 in Ybor City after several shots of mescal.

Like laying on the wet floor In the bathroom of a club district bar... Holy shit.

Gnawing on the end of that cigar I was smoking didn't help either.

I remember that mescal has a very woody aftertaste to it, more so than tequila but hopefully I'll never drink it again.

There is no such thing as "good" mezcal:  it's the kerosene to tequila's gasoline (less refined and made from any agave versus Blue Agave).

That said, this used to be my go to [con gusano (agave worm included!)]:

It's smokey...  I have a bottle gifted to me by my work counterpart in Mexico, I'll probably have 95% of it left 10 years from know unless I find someone that likes it.

That is my experience, but to be honest every time I have danced with it things got a bit hazy.

Bullshit.  Any of the offerings from Del Maguey are excellent.  Only total shit mezcals have a worm in them.

Try Bacanora-----although sometimes a challenge to find, it is lighter and a bit less smokey than regular Mescal.

It took years to forget the hangover from the Monte Alban crap with the worm.

There is good 100% agave mescal though!! In general it can be just as high quality as Tequila. The difference is they can use more types of agave in Mescal. The last bottle I had was Sombra and it was not a painful experience - tasted quite good for a Joven (young).

Well, as long as you didn't also have your finger in some guy's butt it could have been worse.

Pardon the the ignorance, but what is the logic/magic behind the worm?

I bought a bottle in Mexico. I came home and my roomate said he drank it and I was so happy. Previously when I drank it,  I went to work and my boss told me to go home. That bad.

The worm is a distraction from the real challenge, which is drinking enough of the swill to actually get to it.

This.   Don't take 17 shots of the cheapest stuff you can find and it will be good.

Del Maguey is what you seek.

As hallucinogens go, the worm could possibly get you there. One might be better off eating fungus growing on cow shit or chewing dried cactus -- both of which are guaranteed to cause some pretty serious hallucinogenic effects.

I can see a worm eating challenge being very entertaining. Of course it would have to be preceded by heavy mezcal ingestion.

If only the ANTIFA crowd would use their Soro's bucks to swill worm laden mezcal we could eventually see either peace or all-out war, heh?
