Saw this while driving through a small town known for their deer hunting. 25 lbs for $4 seems a tad pricy for corn. Attachment Attached File

$1.25 for a 16 oz bottle of water seems a tad pricey for something you can get out of your facet for less than a penny.

And much like this little (big?) gadget, I would have probably said "You're crazy" if you told me there was a market for it, despite the insane and obvious markup. And yet...

Why is the loading spout so close to the ground? Put that shit up higher so I can just back the truck up to it and not have to work picking it up.

Have a couple of these around here. Higher than giraffe pussy.

A bushel is 2.5 cubic feet. A bushel of decent corn at harvest time should weigh about 70 pounds.

Corn is about $3.50 per bushel so he's selling you a little over a third of bushel for a little more than a whole bushel.

That's the genius of it. $4 is nothing. That it's a ridiculous price per pound doesn't matter. If you only need 25-50 lbs of corn to get 'er done, who the fuck cares about $4-8 bucks?

Son of a Bitch! You might need rail cars to haul your money away in Texas during deer season!

My son, and I looked into purchasing one of these but I couldn't justify the price of the unit.

I'm amazed by the amount of corn the guys on our club feed to the deer every year.  It's not baiting, it's feeding...

I think the cost for the machine was somewhere around $40,000.

A bushel of shelled corn is 56 pounds.  Mine has a test weight in the 60 pound range but I still get paid for 56 pound units.  A bushel is 1.2 cubic feet.  You may be talking ear corn, which is 50% cob.

First one I've seen was in Kentucky last year.

I had brought corn with me so didn't need any.

It seemed about twice what I paid for mine.    I think I paid around $5 for 50lb bags.

People were using it.

I think I paid $7 for a 40lb bag of “apple” flavored corn at Walmart last night.

I just didn’t feel like heading over to Tractor Supply.

I guess it’s like shitty apple flavored liquor. Don’t give a shit, just putting it out for hogs.

Hmmmm.

Few years back, one of my brothers installed a corn fired corn dryer for a guy. Straight corn was bagged and sold as deer corn. Corn from same bin was sometimes dried with heat from burning corn. This was bagged as stove corn. Some sort of tax incentives/ renewable energy deal. Owner was a smart guy.

Two bigger issues,
Can deer read the signs?
What are the deer going to use for money.  It isn't like they pockets full of cash.

I just saw similar corn dispensers in Oklahoma (Pawhuska & Davenport). They were a better design where you could lower the chute to fill barrels in your pickup. Or you could purchase bags and fill them yourself. I believe the price was $11.00 for 35 lbs. The only drawback I saw was the roof hatch might allow rainwater to get the corn wet and have it spoil. Otherwise, I'd just come by once a day to sweep up what gets spilled.

Ripoff

$5 for 40lbs around here.  Way cheaper if you buy from a farmer direct, but I don't have the storage for it.

My grandfather sold deer corn for $5/50 lbs, twenty years ago.

Doesn't seem like the retail price for deer corn from a farmer has gone up any since then.

Not sure what that says for economics or the local economy.

There's a couple of corn vending machine suppliers. I have a better plan, just need someone to create the app. Kinda like Uber except local farmers and feed stores deliver direct, pay in app etc.
