Semi-degenerates don't have the bible and baby Jesus to shield them.

I watched a couple episodes. In one,the patriarch went to the church for money to build their house. While not relying upon the govt for Section 8 housing, asking others to provide for a family you can't afford isn't exactly a conservative principle. In another,he commented in a very condescending manner that his wife "has baggage,"meaning that she did not initially believe in their cult's mating practice where dating is prohibited. God forbid some man ruin a woman by being in her presence without supervision. I absolutely think this unnatural view of relations/sexuality contributed to their son being a creep.

They are harmless to me but I'm free to think they're more than a little nutty. I'm never going to have a serious conversation with a Young Earther just like I'll never engage in debate with a Communist, some ideas are just so incredibly flawed to me that there is no merit in their discussion so we probably aren't likely to hang out any time soon.

Everyone is weird in the eyes of someone.  I find it terribly unfair that the older girls have to raise children but didn't get to have the sex.   I wouldn't be surprised if one or more decides to have -0- kids of their own.

Definitely weird - and it has nothing to do with the fact that they're devout Christians.

Any family that goes out of their way to eschew even benign cultural norms is a bit odd by default. You can still live a perfectly normal, wholesome and healthy life, while blending in and not looking like a separatist of some sort. Millions upon millions of Christians in the US manage to do this just fine. If your family deviates far enough from social and cultural norms to attract the attention of reality television producers (and you take it a step further by inviting them into your home), you've got a few screws loose.

To expand on my previous post, here's a thought experiment:

Imagine a family led by a patriarch who happens to be an atheist. For some nutty reason, he decides that society reached it's cultural zenith circa 1975. To that end, the entire family lives as though it's still 1975. Nothing they own dates any later. They intentionally live in a time warp (and they homeschool their kids to that effect). They don't own computers, cell phones, etc. The mother sews everyone's clothing from old McCall's patterns, since you can't buy new clothes from the period. They wear their hair exactly as straight/conservative folks would have in 1975. They don't use debit cards - just cash. They have a rotary phone in the kitchen. Even the furniture and appliances date no later than 1975.

There's nothing ethically or morally wrong with what they're doing (and it'd make for a fascinating reality TV show, now that I sit here and think about it ). They're not hurting anyone. But it'd be fucking weird. The fact that they're living so far outside of what the rest of America considers normal, is what would make it compelling television.

This.  The simple fact that they chose the reality show lifestyle for themselves and their progeny defines them as weirdos, no different than the Kardashians and Jenners.

Imagine this for a moment:  You live in the heart of some large city; New York, Boston, Los Angeles, wherever,  You build yourself a new house, but all walls are plexiglass except for the bathrooms.  You announce it in the media that your whole family will be living in this giant plexiglass box, and that everyone is encouraged to come by and stare at you whenever they want.  And the rooms are set up with omni-directional microphones, and everything you say is played on speakers outside the house so those lame people who sit and stare at you can also hear your conversations without ever having to take part.

That would be a little weird, wouldn't it?

What's the difference between living in a plexiglass box, and having your very own reality TV show?

Anyone who consciously shits out 20 kids is at least a little weird.

Anyone who consciously shits out 20 kids they can't afford to house is pretty fucking weird (believe they were gifted a lot of house money)

Throw their cult like views in the mix and I don't see how there is even a question.

I've met most of them. One of my bests friends is a member of the extended family. I find their life style a bit odd, but they are decent folks. If you believe everything that happens in the show is unscripted, or that the producers don't try to make a family centered on religious values look weird, I'm guessing you're a big WWE fan.

I had no idea until I saw a picture I thought was funny and showed it to him and he said, "That's my Aunt."  Oops

When it comes to kids, quantity is not a quality all it's own. At a certain point you are doing a disservice to your older children by both subdividing your time & attention from them and also placing an increasing burden on their own time & attention in order to cover your deficit with the younger children. Also, I may not be a 3rd-wave feminist, but these insular groups are sexist and the girls are given limited options on their futures because they are effectively considered necessary breeding stock.

My wife has watched the show couple times in past 10+ years and seen all the kids grow up and she is surprised that kids are so normal...except for the oldest son who diddled his sisters and had extramarital affairs.  As she put it, they are very naïve and maybe "different" but doesn't seem strange.  Definitely they are harmless and not effecting anyone else.  Couple of older kids have gotten married recently and seems to have normal married life.  Wife said one girl even started wearing pants after she got married.

The family deviates from social norms.  That's essentially the definition of weird.  Lucky for the daughters, they're pretty, so whatever psychosis they've developed will be overlooked by the majority of their suitors.  In 1865 my double income no kids household would be weird.  Lucky for me, it's not 1865, because I'm not pretty.

Your thought experiment is interesting, but isn't comparable.  The situation presented is different, but not weird.  There's nothing in that scenario that foments (for lack of a better term) social dysfunction.  Social difficulty?  Yes, to some extent.  But not dysfunction.  I'm sure people who depend on cell phones, fuel injection, debit cards and Amazon would call it weird, but you can get along just fine in society without all that.

The problem with the situation the Duggar patriarch put his family in is that religious fundamentalism often does foment social dysfunction.  I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but there are a fuckton of "Christians" on the kiddie-toucher rolls, and they didn't learn that shit from mom making their sisters' dresses with a sewing machine.  He then compounded the social issues inherent in religious fundamentalism by cranking out more kids than he and his wife could responsibly manage.  Further, let's face it, in our 70's thought experiment, there's nothing that leads me to believe that if it turns out junior is fingering sally after bedtime, dad will send junior down the road to hang sheetrock for a biblethumping Chester the Molester for "treatment" and "report" the incident to a cop who collects child porn.  That's not "weird".  That's fucked up.

My wife watches that show. She always asks which daughter I think is prettiest and I point to that one. I can't remember the names, but she has good skin and seems much more intelligent than the rest.
I think their lifestyle is weird, but I hate to blame it for the older brother's behavior. It might be the cause, but then again maybe it's just the law of averages. Have 20 kids, some are gonna be fucked up.
