Two films come to mind when sports movies come up and I don't know their names:

1. Charlie Sheen baseball movie.

2. The guy from the TV show "Quantam Leap" in a football movie with Kathy Ireland as the kicker.

1. Major League
2. Unnecessary Roughness

Both great movies.

OP is correct.

Field of Dreams is the only movie where men are legally allowed to cry.

You are correct but few here will understand.  Unless you have lost your father and maybe under similar circumstances, most will not get it.  I have been in a room with friends and during that one scene (Hey Dad, wanna have a catch?) and some of us had to leave the room.

Another good one I just thought of especially if you wrestled in HS or college is Win Win.

The kid that starred in it was actually a high school state champion so they did not have to use some un-coordinated double for the wrestling scenes.  Alex Shaffer who played Kyle Timmons was damn good both as an actor and a wrestler.

Hell, I watched that movie with my dad the night he died.  His last words to me were “well, son - I guess this is goodbye.”

I was at my dad's side as well.  In part, his last words were:  "There were so many things I wanted to see and do.  Now I've run out of time".

As far as serious movies go, yes.

Major League/Bull Durham for comedy ones.

Mine said he’d led a good life, gone shooting with his grandkids, visited 6 continents, been shot at by communists on 3, killed communists on 2, etc. I think he was pretty ok with where he was... then again, that crusty old bastard really had been everywhere and done everything....

No.

Not even a "good movie" if you take out the sports movie requirement.

Boring, pointless, and stupid.

Fixed it for you.  Both good movies.

But my vote, if I had to choose one sports movie as "best", is Hoosiers.

Seriouy though, add The Trouble With The Curve.

CSB: I'm an extra in The Natural.

ETA: No one mentioned Invincible? How about the Rocky movies?
