Absolute shit show, just like BR2049. Hope he gets AIDS and dies, just like him killing BR. DV is a communist and a terrorist, and should not be allowed to make anything. Fuck him, fuck the studio that allowed him to make it, and fuck Ford for even showing up in it. He should have let them CGI'ed his involvement so he could denounce then. Ford should stick to crashing planes, not good movies that he was in 30 years ago-Crystal Skulls? Get da fuck outta here. I am a huge fan of the original Blade Runner. And BR 2049 surpasses it.

which, I didn't think it was possible Hollywood could make a good sequel anymore.

I'm with this guy.

BR is my favorite movie.

BR2049 is one of my ( if not my ONLY) favorite movies of the 21st Century.

I was in 4th grade when I read Dune the first time...

I think the writing in the BR sequel was really mediocre (in spite of being a total nerd for the original), so I guess I disagree with the sequel fanboys, but you never know.

2049 has it's faults...but look at it as a movie about loneliness...and individual dignity (or the lack thereof) in that universe.

I will totally watch a good remake of Dune.........there is just one problem. SJW will fuck the hell out of it for the "Christian white male". All they will get out of it is Muslims rising up and overthrowing the Christians. They will pay no mind to the novel that used those terms and concepts to outline the religious nature of the Freemen and the Empire to where the reader could understand it and Herbert didn't have to create new bodies for ideas everyone understood.

And yes bonus points if Sting is in it! Best Feyd ever!

Wish my Dad had lived 1 more year to see it.

He didn’t go to movies much but he would go to select ones that he was interested in. He was into sci fi books, golf, scuba diving and German craftsmanship; cars, tanks, etc.

I have one concern though. Dune would require a massive budget to do it justice. Because it would need to be at least 6 hours long. You could divide that into a trilogy or miniseries. But the money spent on set design and graphics would be huge. And I don't know if Dune appeals to large enough audience that you could get the money from the studio and investors necessary to make it a good one.

Villeneuve is one of the best current directors in the world. But you cannot do Dune on the cheap. And are studios going to spend 300 million when they will be lucky to break even in the US?

Thing about Dune is that it’s very cerebral- a lot of the story is not told through dialog or visuals. I’m not sure a decent screenplay could be put together that isn’t either annoyingly wordy or cut to shreds.

It’s hard for me to judge DV’s directorial skills. The weakness of the blade runner sequel wasn’t necessarily the direction as much as the mediocre writing and poor characters. Certainly the special effects and photography were brilliant. Honestly, I’d hate to see an epic story like Dune treated this way... turned into a poorly written emo piece wrapped in brilliant effects... but if it does, the one ultimately in control of putting it all together is the director.

I know he was nervous about doing it.  Probably for many of the reasons you stated.  I am sure that he will try to do his very best, as DV, like Christopher Nolan really does seem to be interested in entertaining his audience.

Neither Nolan nor Villenueve are "perfect" film makers; however they both have an excellent work ethic and it shows in their production values.

I am not necessarily optimistic but I am hopeful.

If any of you have ever heard of Alejandro Jodorowsky.....man...his version would have been either horrible as all get out...or one hell of a midnight, acid trip movie.

Orson Welles as Vladimir Harkonnen....

Savlador Dali as the Emperor....

David Carradine as Duke Leto.........

Damn...I am trippin' already.

I think it would have been a cult trippy movie....................especially with Salvador Dali in it..............the vision Jodorowsky had for the Sardaukar shock troops was very interesting, as well as having H.R. Geiger working on the film

So,

Dune.

It's one of those soft sci fi novels I have never really gotten into...and yet have always enjoyed the first novel, just the same.  For me, it's kind of like a Christopher Nolan film...despite it's imperfections, you can tell the author is trying to make something beautiful for you.  Too, as a fan of deserts ( I hate lots of plants, water...AND BUGS ) I have always enjoyed sparse ecosystems.  For various reasons, Dune (only the first book) has always appealed to me as an imaginative experiment.

I am one of the few who appreciated SOME of the things that David Lynch TRIED to do with the 1984 version of Dune.  That being said, he was drawn into the project way too quickly and without enough forethought.  Also, some of the plot devices and other things cooked up for the movie such as heart plugs, the weirding modules, etc. really ruined what could have been a better story.  I think it was the set design and casting IDEAS that I liked. I was always bummed that he was hampered by jumping into Dune too quickly, without a more explicit knowledge of the book, the fans of the Dune universe and by the sheer scope of something that should have been more thought out before being tackled.

Now Denis Villenueve is tackling Dune...and, after seeing and REALLY enjoying Blade Runner 2049 ( a movie that I was COMPLETELY AGAINST being made ) ...I must say I am pretty excited by his two part venture into the Dune Universe.  I didn't like BR 2049 the first time I saw it..but I didn't hate it, either.  After seeing it several more times, I have become a HUGE fan of the movie.  I also enjoyed Sicario ( again, not perfect ) and Arrival.  He works very hard at telling mature, yet enjoyable tales.

I am thinking, if anyone can tell this story and tell it well....it will be Villenueve.  I thank God every day that Ridley Scott won't be involved in this because after Prometheus and Covenant, I wouldn't trust Ridley with making me an In n' Out burger....and you don't know how much that seriously breaks my heart as Ridley has directed some of my most beloved films.  Hell, Ridley Scott is who got me addicted to movies, quite honestly.

Anyhow, is anyone else excited or curious about this?  I am cautiously optimistic about it.

What are your thoughts on the Sci-Fi Mini-series from the early '00's?  I thought it was well done, wish it had a bigger budget.  The special effects have not withstood the test of time.

Now officially on my list.

I have been using the Ideas of Ice and Fire youtube synopsis' to fill in a bit on the Frank Herbert books, 1-6 and have decided to go ahead and forge past Dune Messiah and see if I like the rest.  I've only read the first two and, quite honestly, only sincerely enjoyed the first one.  However, being a bit filled in the universe now, I think I can give Messiah another try and move past it.  We shall see.

Except for stuff like fully developed characters and a real story...

Seriously, I have no clue how anyone could think BR2 doesn’t feel like a mediocre fanfic sequel glossed over with excellent SFX (which is what it was).

How it differs from the original: Characters were paper thin and never developed (bad guys just randomly did bad guy things) story was stupid as fuck (like cats chasing a laser pointer through the landscape), at the end of the movie absolutely nothing and nobody is different from the way it was at the beginning of the story (except the utterly soulless main character is dead, yawn)... Harrison Ford mailed in a useless, halfhearted cameo. The original had body and soul... the sequel had nothing even remotely like either. It’s a half-assed bit of nihilist barf wrapped in really good effects.

I think people are so starved in a wasteland of (current) bad sci-fi that they’ll drool over anything with good special effects and “rolling oranges” action. It wasn’t as awful as Prometheus, but it’s an utterly forgettable movie. Some folks wanted it to be epic so bad they don’t realize how mediocre it really is. 10 years after BR, it was more popular than it ever was at the box office - I’ll bet 10 years from now the sequel will be mostly forgotten.
