It's a great film. It came out shortly after The Phantom Menace. I thought at the time that The Matrix was what The Phantom Menace should have been, in terms of quality and innovation. The Matrix was exciting, and edgy.  We forget now how cool it was at the time only because it was copied so much afterward.

I was going to say that this movie gave me a healthy appreciation for Cougars but on further investigation these are, in fact, Beretta Cheetahs.

...but this movie still have me an appreciation for cougars...

Another thing where this movie really hit me was the soundtrack. I've only bought two movie soundtracks in my life; this one, and Last of the Mohicans. Both were excellent at setting the mood and tone of the film.

When Trinity did the slow jumpkick at the beginning of the movie, there was a big reaction in the theater.  Gasp/wow/woah/awesome etc.

That movie seriously raised the bar for special effects.  It was the Star Wars of its day.

Fun fact for those who don't know:

The movie still holds up. I rewatched it for the first time in years a few months ago and was surprised.

The philosophy feels a little strained these days but that's likely due to the changes in the world since then

I had no idea what it was when it came out.  In fact, I didn't know it even existed, as I can't recall even seeing a commercial.  Six months later, a friend of mine lent me the DVD.  I enjoyed it.

As an aside, I saw an article about the movie, today, on my newsfeed.  There was a bit of revisionism going on, as they commented that the Wachowski Brothers were known simply as the "Wachowskis" (it was always Wachowski Brothers in press).  It never uses the word "brother" at any point, in fact, opting for "sibling".  It also tells of their first script, saying it was written by "Lilly and Lana".  I'm fairly certain those aren't the names on the script.  I guess it is improper to mention the fact that they are dudes.

I liked Will Smith in the '90s (MIB, ID4), however I'm glad they didn't cast him. Just like I'm glad we got Laurence Fishburne instead of Val Kilmer. They captured lighting in a bottle with the cast they ended up with.

I remember after the movie came out there was some controversy over allegations the the Wachowski brothers stole the script for the movie. Given how terribly the sequels veered from mythology of the first I'd say that was a strong possibility. Either that or they accidentally made a great movie (also a strong possibility).

It blew me away when I saw it. It was the first movie to do that to me. It's never happened since.

Reloaded was pretty bad, but one of the first movies to show a realistic hacking sequence, using nmap.

I had read Neuromancer, so I thought maybe William Gibson had been involved in writing it, especially since his virtual world was also referred to as the matrix, among other names.
When Neo got unplugged, I thought basically, "Neat.  I don't think I've ever seen 'jacking in' as a concept in a movie before.

But a lot of people had never been exposed to cyberpunk, so it was a very new concept.

The Matrix is a classic.
I think The Thirteenth Floor was a better movie about living in a stimulation.

The Matrix was the end of Cyberpunk. With the advancement of the internet as we have seen. The genre is pretty much dead. Films like the Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, etc are a relic of a bygone era. The idea of an entire virtual world was an strange and foreign concept then. Now, we pretty much live it with 2nd Life, MMORPGs, Social Media, etc...

It was an amazingly well done film borh visually and story wise and in my opinion did not need a sequel. The best related material ever to it was the two short stories from the Animatrix that explained.what led up to the Matrix. That was damn good.

As for other pre 9/11 films. To me, The Siege was another good film.

The one with the orgasm cake or something.

And the werewolves or ghosts or whatever.

"The move from a structuralist account in which capital is understood to structure social relations in relatively homologous ways to a view of hegemony in which power relations are subject to repetition, convergence, and rearticulation brought the question of temporality into the thinking of structure, and marked a shift from a form of Althusserian theory that takes structural totalities as theoretical objects to one in which the insights into the contingent possibility of structure inaugurate a renewed conception of hegemony as bound up with the contingent sites and strategies of the rearticulation of power."

To ask what this means is to miss the point...

BS.

Reloaded is a better action movie than the original ever thought about being.

While The Matrix is the only solid movie of the series in both storytelling and action, the entire end from getting to the keymaker through the interstate scene is better than any single action scene in the original.
