Beyond that we used a 1917 dated band saw for a some parts, and a 1940 dated drill press.

Yep, Dauntless, Helldiver, and the Avenger (in the ventral pisition) all had AN/M2 .30-cals. Early-war USAAF fighters like the P-40 had them too, but they were replaced with .50-cals fairly quickly.

Perhaps. These photos were reportedly taken on Iwo Jima if you can believe the internet. Just because the guy has his hand where it is does not mean the gun isn't real. Could have been anyone posing with it.

True. There does seem to be camo paint on the receiver. If you look how the bipod was welded on, it looks like someone really went to town with a gas welder and filler stick.

Sounds like fun, but after all the hassle to get it running right in .30-06, I'll keep the current caliber. I have saved up enough 06 over the last 30yrs I've got plenty.

It's been years since I've shot an AN M2, or any 1919 derivative, but IIRC, wouldn't his hand be just *slightly* to the rear of the ejection chute area? Not where I'd want to be during full auto due to risk of an OOB, or other failure, but then that risk might not be known to everyone who used one in WWII.

Ian's historical information in the video is good, but the gun featured is a Hollywood abortion as cheesy as Han Solo's blaster. Allen head bolts everywhere, wrong carry handle in the wrong place, and no means for mounting the ammo can, etc..

Nothing against Ian, but that gun is the equivalent of someone doing a video on a MK12 Mod1 SPR using an M16A1 with a scope mounted to a removable carry handle, a UTG drop in rail and an OPS INC muzzle brake and no collar.

Just found the book I had been looking for. That photo is credited to be the stinger belonging to Grevich. Probably the one he built on Bougainville.

I've always thought the Stinger seemed like an updated twist on the 1925 Maxim-Tokarev - which I've always wanted to clone.

Of course with Russians being more about the brute force approach and very economically minded at the time the thing ended up weighing a good 30lbs unloaded. I still want one and I still have most of the parts just sitting until I get time enough to make one.

This thread might finally push me over the edge into action. You've done a great job!

I have one of those in my shop that I am working on for a customer. He amnesty registered it but never completed it. The open bolt is definitely interesting.
