The current GX and the LC200 have a little cubby that is 21"x6"x2".  Word on the street is a 10/22 in a Magpul Backpacker chassis fits like it was OEM.

I'm wasting a Saturday hanging around the house as I wait for UPS to deliver my roof rack which requires a signature for delivery. (I hate that!)

I had a hard time deciding on which rack to go with but in the end I opted for the Sherpa Crestone because I like the way it mounts, when compared to the other racks on my short list, but man was it spendy.  But not so spendy that it kept me from also buying an OVS Nomadic 180 awning! lol

I was originally looking at 270 awnings but the rear hatch on the 4Runner hits a support bar on every model I looked at. Besides that, when looking at an overhead view, it really offers very little shade and barely covers the rear hatch. Anyway, if you're in the market for an awning, OVS is having a big sale right now and if you add the items to your cart and load your email, but don't purchase right away, they'll email you a 5% off coupon that same night.

How accurate are a four pack of Amazon Chinesium deflators in the real world?

Well, I decided to start with 25psi.

My 200 Series Land Cruiser weighs 6,250 lbs and is currently running 33.4" (nominal) LT275/70R18 E-Rated Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT tires.  The load and inflation tables tell us that at 40psi this tire matches the OEM 285/60R18 tire's 33psi load rating.

So, can you effectively air down E-rated tires to drive on the beach?  Let's science!

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009524_jpg-3198746.JPG

I bought a 4-pack of Chinesium deflators from Amazon.  Dial in the desired PSI, twist them on your valve stem and give them a tug.  How accurate are they?  Pretty damn accurate, it turns out.

More importantly, how much will E-rated sidewalls flex when aired down?  More than you might expect.

I started with the tire at 40psi on a handy rock* and deflated to 30psi, 20psi, and 10psi.  I checked the deflator's accuracy with my Longacre tire gauge.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009551_png-3198768.JPG

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009552_png-3198769.JPG

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009553_png-3198771.JPG

Yes, you can air down an E-rated tire and get your desired results. The deflator accuracy at the lowest settings degraded a bit (10psi deflator setting, 12psi actual, for instance), but I'm not concerned.

With a lighter vehicle off-road, running E-rated tires at 10-15psi or even single digits seems completely reasonable.  I believe I'll run at 20psi on the beach in the LC200, which is probably overkill.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/IMG_20240423_170720_jpg-3199001.JPG

In Texas, beaches are public roads and the speed limit for this time of year is 15mph.  The tires are in no danger of heat buildup at this speed.

I've seen pundits say that E-rated tires will almost act as runflats on a lighter vehicle. Bullshit.  While the Land Cruiser is a bit chonk, it's obvious that these tires are seriously underinflated at 10psi and off of the Rock of Truth.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009550_png-3198753.JPG

So now I have a flat tire.  What do?

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009540_jpg-3198756.JPG

I timed it from 10psi to 40psi.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009557_png-3198996.JPG

The Viair did get hot but didn't hit its automatic shut off temp. Viair claims a 33% duty cycle at 100psi (similar to the Milwaukee M18 Fuel inflator by the way) so I see no reason why it won't be able to air all four from the 20psi I plan on running on the beach back up to 40psi.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009538_jpg-3198779.JPG

That is all.

*I was unaware until the ladyfriend got home from work that the handy rock was, in fact, her special heart-shaped rock.  Oops.

Finally posting here since these two have been sucking all of my hobby money for the past 3 years (mainly LC, trailer just got here a month ago).  Really taken a huge step back from recreational shooting the past 3-4 years and have only been out a handful of times so been filling my time with this instead.  LC is almost completely done, with the exception that 74Weld is saying they're developing a portal axle kit for it this year.  Most money and efforts will go into the trailer now.  I do moderate wrenching myself, but nothing too serious and wanted a camping/hunting trailer that I could also try some stuff that pushes a bit of the boundaries and my comfort that I probably wouldn't consider attempting on my own vehicle.  One thing while doing research about trailer work is that I do get a lot of hits on Arfcom with answers (in addition to SteelSoldiers) so figured I'd fire the account back up.

First order of business on the trailer was addressing the wiring since the existing harness got shredded somehow as well as the safety chains.  Got lights sorted and cut off the military chains and replaced them with a 1/2" quicklink and new chains that would actually fit the holes in my bumper.  Next thing will be replacing the jack wheel as it never wants to rotate and feels flimsy and cheap.  Planning on pulling the surge brakes and lunette and welding on a 2" receiver to use a Max Coupler as well as welding on some corner steadies to help stabilize; of course a big one is changing out the hideous wheels.  Long term will be welding together a rack for it to be able to put a RTT so I can use the trailer as a base camp, swapping to a Timbren axle-less suspension on it and a full bed off cleanup of the bed and frame and re-spray with Raptor Liner.

Also gearing up for a big trip out west this summer--3 nights in Glacier, 2 nights in Yellowstone, 1 night in Grand Teton, and 2 nights in Jackson.  Then home for 2 weeks and back out to Colorado for the annual 200 series trail event out there (in Ouray this year).

There is and there isn't.

The good stuff is all on private land, the Blalock Family owns tens of thousands of acres and has an insane complex of trails.

National park stuff, get on a non OHV trail with a buggy, bike, or 4x4 and you're going to jail. They do not mess around, therefore in all that is the Great Smoky Mtn National Park, there are no OHV trails.

I'm in Middle TN and there are only a few decent places to go, LBL, Prentice Cooper, Coppinger's Cove, and Tellico Plains. Really have to get into NC or KY for the good shit.

I think we were about 40(?) miles from there.

I know there are some easier trails.  And some nasty ones.

Purty. Had a camping trip planned with my kid and a buddy and his kids, but we got rained out and had to push it back.

Kiddo and I took a drive to scout a hiking trail we've never done and hit some road that looked about like that, but no worse. I just took one quick pic over the hood while phone was in it's holder. Everything was soaked but the road was rocky so no issues. Trailhead was a pond though haha.

We only saw two other vehicles in an hour or two, both Tacos on the county rd leading up to this one

It's fun as those are the "routes" to the gnarly stuff. So here we are a bunch of IFS Toyota's on what seems like an epic ride.....

When the 1988 Suzuki Samurai on 1 tons and 39" boggers comes cruisin by on the way to go ride something wild.

There is literally everything there for every type of vehicle.

We should do an ARF ride / camp at WR now that I think about it.

Which honestly are the most fun and where I've moved towards.

My LJ was dragged through the Savvy and Currie catalogs and was overtly built. Problem is that everyone traded their TJ/LJ/JK's in for either Gladiators or Toyotas as we have kids and "camping" is an easier excuse to go wheeling (drag offspring along) these days.

I'd rather do a nice good ride on forest track with some fun obstacles / holes / crossings / etc.. (Think DBBB or KAT in KY) than a boulder garden.

I’d be down but it would need to be late fall for me to get out of work.

I thought about going for a “long weekend” but 10 hours a quite a drive for a day or a day and a half.

Badlands in Indiana is only 5 hours and Holly Oaks is 6.  Those would be easier for me.

In my younger years it was all about horsepower and flex.  Reliability was second.  Or maybe third. Comfort wasn't even on the scale.  If you gotta choose between a 5 gallon bucket for a seat, or stronger U-Joints...  the choice is easy.

These days it's all about that compromise between reliability, comfort, and capability.  And for me, heavy on the reliability.  If you're not feeling a sort of constant low anxiety about "what's it gonna take to walk out from here" then you're too close to people.

At least some of that is because i'm now older and have much more disposable income.

When I was young it was never about horsepower. I had a bone stock 4 liter TJ for crying out loud
I mean the TJ was far from stock, but the 4.0 was completely stock. Wouldn’t have mattered what to a 4.0 though. Never could’ve been about HP anyways haha but I enjoyed actually wheeling it hard.

These days I don’t care to “wheel”. I just want to get away from civilization for as long as possible. I typically take a multitude of 2-4 day trips each year to northern NM or SW CO, and 1-2 longer 10+ day trips each year. The shorter trips are usually just 1 destination setting up camp and spending some time hiking and fishing. The longer trips are moving camp every 2-3 days seeking new adventures and reliving old ones. Covid really screwed things up. Now I’m finding people where I never saw them before. Makes you have to try harder.

After candy-caning driveshafts, snapping CV axles and bashing body panels, I'm with you on that last bit. All those years of wheeling taught me what I need to know to get away from the weekenders and have a nice quiet evening or two in the wilderness in comfort.

Many years ago I owned one. It was a turnkey car. Took me places the big trucks would go. I got a lot of funny looks from them.

With that said, I think they have gained a lot of weight since then. I bought my mom a newer one but she had issues with the braking system so we got rid of it. For an on road/Fire road I think they are gtg. They will get you to most trail heads in NA.

Small but nice little fix installed today on the 200.

I pulled the rear monitors after I learned they're selling for four digits used condition due to the OEM replacements running like $3800 or something We've never even used them, but there's pretty high breakage potential based on how far out they stick out.

Anyway, finally able to cover the holes and wires with some steel powder-coated covers from Victory 4x4 after about a month wait time. They look great and solid, much better than the old monitors...or the holes left by the monitors

Yeah, I couldn't believe it at first but after I saw someone talking about it on ih8mud I searched closed ebay listings and sure enough.

Uninstall took about 5 minutes total. A few pics and an ebay listing later...I sold one for a hair over $1K, then listed the other separately so as not to compete with my own first listing.

The Victory covers were about $100 for the pair and similarly installed in under 5 minutes.

Booyah. Man, they bumped their price up. I ordered March 29... Still worth it and i would do it again at the current price. Trekboxx is charging $200 for plastic covers. They look like kydex actually.

I fold the seats down and sleep in the back sometimes when I'm camping solo, so getting rid of those monitors is nice.

I saw the Trekboxx and they are definitely not worth $200.

I can confidently say I will never miss the screens.  I will, however, enjoy a couple grand.

Yeah no doubt.

One other thing I did a couple weeks ago was the Loncky steering wheel cover. If you have a 16 or 17 I'm sure you know about the steering wheel leather flaking

Took me almost all day but worth it. I'm happier every single time I drive.

I haven't run 22 in probably two years now.

My open/open Taco on 32s didn't get stuck while the two 4Rs with lockers in front on 34s struggled #drivermod

I keep hearing that it's either really mild, or that it's crazy. Think we just need to go see for ourselves.

I haven't done mine yet.  Did you remove the wheel to do it or did you just get comfortable in the driver's seat for a while?

Lol that's crazy, I bought it almost the same day I think.

I didn't have the courage or know-how to remove the wheel or even the covers. I pulled into the shop and got comfy. Turned the wheel a few times to get better positioning. Use lots of tape and get comfy with the little spudger. Tucking sucked. Stitching was fun.

I spent about 5 hours on it, maybe a touch more can't remember. It turned out pretty good though.

Y’all should ball out and get the PVS wheel.

I might just.

Do they retain the factory heat?  Very important for a Houston-based overland rig.

True ballin' is 5 hours with a needle and thread and ending the day with bruised fingertips
