I dunno .

It’s just what all the Aussies do to their 200 and 70 series.

22 depends on the day and whether or not it’s rained. I did it in September one year and it was a dust bowl. Really fun small tire trail, “why is this a medium trail?”. I laughed at the “I survived trail 22” stickers at the general store. Then I did it the following June and barely made it. My buddy couldn’t finish the trail and took a ton of body damage.

I wanna go back.

I’ve said no to a weekend there after a week of rain.

Literally changes everything.

The folks who come from out west for the week often encounter what the Appalachian rainforest is all about. “We’ve got mud at home in CA, CO, UT, AZ, etc…” then they meet the real shit.

Due to some very unfortunate circumstances, I had to replace 3 vehicles in our stable. Picked up a 200 for me, LS400 for my oldest kid, and the youngest wants to be like dad so we grabbed him a GX470. Now the fun begins. I've got bilstein 6112/5160s for the 200 waiting in the garage for this gout flare up to heal so I can install em. The boy is gonna have to save some money but eventually we will do a mild lift with some wheels and tires.

I’ve got Fox 2.0s on it right now, and they ride great. However they’ll need a rebuild soon, and I’ve heard of enough failures with the 2.0 running as much weight as I do constantly.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/PXL_20240406_212434995_jpg-3198959.JPG

My 200 Series Land Cruiser weighs 6,250 lbs and is currently running 33.4" (nominal) LT275/70R18 E-Rated Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT tires.  The load and inflation tables tell us that at 40psi this tire matches the OEM 285/60R18 tire's 33psi load rating.

So, can you effectively air down E-rated tires to drive on the beach?  Let's science!

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009524_jpg-3198746.JPG

I bought a 4-pack of Chinesium deflators from Amazon.  Dial in the desired PSI, twist them on your valve stem and give them a tug.  How accurate are they?  Pretty damn accurate, it turns out.

More importantly, how much will E-rated sidewalls flex when aired down?  More than you might expect.

I started with the tire at 40psi on a handy rock* and deflated to 30psi, 20psi, and 10psi.  I checked the deflator's accuracy with my Longacre tire gauge.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009551_png-3198768.JPG

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009552_png-3198769.JPG

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009554_png-3198770.JPG

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009553_png-3198771.JPG

Yes, you can air down an E-rated tire and get your desired results. The deflator accuracy at the lowest settings degraded a bit (10psi deflator setting, 12psi actual, for instance), but I'm not concerned.

With a lighter vehicle off-road, running E-rated tires at 10-15psi or even single digits seems completely reasonable.  I believe I'll run at 20psi on the beach in the LC200, which is probably overkill.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/IMG_20240423_170720_jpg-3199001.JPG

In Texas, beaches are public roads and the speed limit for this time of year is 15mph.  The tires are in no danger of heat buildup at this speed.

I've seen pundits say that E-rated tires will almost act as runflats on a lighter vehicle. Bullshit.  While the Land Cruiser is a bit chonk, it's obvious that these tires are seriously underinflated at 10psi and off of the Rock of Truth.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009550_png-3198753.JPG

So now I have a flat tire.  What do?

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009540_jpg-3198756.JPG

I timed it from 10psi to 40psi.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009557_png-3198996.JPG

The Viair did get hot but didn't hit its automatic shut off temp. Viair claims a 33% duty cycle at 100psi (similar to the Milwaukee M18 Fuel inflator by the way) so I see no reason why it won't be able to air all four from the 20psi I plan on running on the beach back up to 40psi.

https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/69748/1000009538_jpg-3198779.JPG

That is all.

*I was unaware until the ladyfriend got home from work that the handy rock was, in fact, her special heart-shaped rock.  Oops.

The Mansfield Cut is no big deal. As long as you don't mind a 6 hour drive on the beach. The last time I got there several stock Subarus were already ahead of me. If the sand gets too questionable there is always hard pack sand near the water line on the beach.
Still a fun trip though!

It will be good to have the 2.0s on standby for when the 2.5s need a rebuild. If you don’t have upgraded springs already, you probably need them. I am running Deaver and keep about 250-300lbs on my truck. I am probably going to add air bags w/ daystar cups very soon. Way too much sag when we are all loaded down for a trip.

Yep. Keeping the 2.0s for rebuild time. I’ve got Carli 2.5 springs up front, and stock leafs in the rear. Have Firestone bags in the rear with Daystar cradles. Going to have either Alcan or Deaver build me a spring pack soon for the rear.

@PhuzzyGnu

I have a confession.

48 hours ago, I did something I swore I'd never do again.

The alignment of circumstances, build design, excellent pricing, and @jafrush let me to buy a set of skinny K02's.

Wanted to get a second set of tires for some spare taco wheels I picked up. Goal was A/T with 3ply - in 235/85/16 (best 1st gen size IMO). This ruled out the Duratrac RT's as those only come in the OG model, Ruled out Toyo's AT3 (enjoyed mine) as they are 2ply in the size. This left two standing, K02 and Falken A/T4W.

My dislike of K02's led me to research the snot out of the new Falken, and there are a lot of so-so reviews out there, with several in the tacomaworld thread returning them. Don't want to play that game, so with some nudging from jafrush - I fo'd.

In full disclosure I was a BFG diehard for 15 years, K0, M/T, KM2, and K02. When I had my F150, I ran the raptor wheels and k02's and it was slip n slide city. Ended up hating them so much I got rid of them for some Cooper ATIII's.

Since BFG is releasing the K03 (Q4 in this size) they are technically discontinued and what's out there is out there. So I was able to get a solid deal and paid right at $200 a tire, which was also nice.

Drove in the storms yesterday and the skinnier profile definitely cuts through water easier and I was not able to get it to break loose without really trying. Compared to them on the F150, uphill turns guaranteed wheel spin. Maybe it's also due to how light the tacoma is.

I'll still hit them with a stick every morning in the driveway.

Hey if the RT's were in a 235, it would of been a no brainer.

E-rated aggressive-er tires that handle 30+ miles of beach sand, slog through mud, handle Houston monsoons and don't degrade the Land Cruiser's ride comfort?  Why, yes please.

And they look rad.

Damn does that thing look sexy. And people wonder why we have this unhealthy fascination. Just look at that thing. Its begging you to do things to it. Things that aren't CoC compliant.

In all seriousness, that looks awesome. Well done!

I’m on my 11 or 12th set of KO2s. All but one set have been the same size. This latest set has become slick on. Wet pavement in the last 10K miles. Have roughly 30K on them. The rest have been excellent. I HATE the KO2 on my HD trucks. For lighter vehicles such as our 4Runner or Tundra they’ve been excellent. I had 126K on my longest set on a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500. I typically achieve 75-90K out of them though. Of that is probably 25-35K on shitty lease roads. I ran probably 7-8 sets of the original KO and was not a fan of them at all. However it’s what my company bought me. Lots of blowouts, poor mileage, flats regularly, and traction wasn’t as good. I’d get 30-40K out of them, which meant I was replacing tires twice a year if not more. I have yet to have a blowout on KO2s. I have had 2 sliced sidewalls, and it happened simultaneously. So I hit something pretty bad. Had a small handful of flats over the years on them, but I can count those on one hand. I’m hoping the KO3 serves me as well. I’ll likely run a set on my Tundra soon, and snag a set for the wife’s new ride later next year if they live up to expectations.

Duratrac is probably the single tire I hate the most. I ran 2 sets on a Cummins, and had the latest set come on my F250. I bought the first set, warranty gave me the second, and would’ve never bought them again had it not come on the F250.  Obnoxiously loud after only a few miles for a mildly aggressive tire. Wear was terrible. There’s no reason my tires should’ve been toast in 25K with the way I drive those trucks. New they were squirrely as shit. That lasted 1000-1500 miles. Wet performance was lacking. They did perform great in snow in a couple blizzards I got caught in up north, but then again my latest Mickey T Baja Boss did just as well in a whiteout blizzard in Ouray in December with none of the downsides. I’d give the new Duratrac RT a try after some time for reviews to come out if favorable.

That could be the same as the KO2s though. I hate them on heavy trucks. Their performance in lighter vehicles is night and day. I haven’t tried the Duratrac on a lighter vehicle to be fair.

All engineering is a compromise.  Harder rubber wears slower, but is less grippy, less flexy, etc.   40k miles out of a ko2 is a tad on the low side, but not horrible.

Performance first.   Then longevity.  Then cost.  If someone wants longevity the KO2 (and likely the KO3) may not be the best tire for their application.
