 Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached FileIt almost seems like the hallway is getting wider which doesn't seem possible, or that threshold is getting shorter, which also doesn't seem possible. But that threshold is definitely pulling off of the wall. And there's a crack down through some of the stones. There's a rubber liner under the stones which goes up the walls for about a foot. I guess the shower is about 10 years old. There's a 5-in concrete slab under the shower. I should have posted this earlier. I forgot about this one. This is inside of the wall on the other side of the damaged shower. I forgot this laundry room had this opening. I can't begin to speculate on what I'm looking at I did not build the shower. It's not wet.  Attached FileI understand this doesn't change anything. |

Looks like a very poorly done installation just from the surface. Won't know just how terrible it is until you tear it out. I would not try to fix it, but replace it instead.

Plate not glued/ nailed, not properly waterproofed or sealed (looks like applied to drywall only. Wood base instead of poured ‘curb’/ pan? Not using the fan?

Looks like a bad job all the way around. My home was made back in 2004 and in 2018, I figured I would redo the shower and modernize it. It was a tiled corner shower with a step down to concrete,(thankfully), and when I removed the glass enclosure, the half walls fell down as the metal studs rusted underneath. After tearing it all down, the morons used standard drywall for the walls of the shower,which is totally wrong and unfortunately, I was not able to check their work while construction was being done due to work,etc.. It caused damage to walls next to the shower area and damaged the vanity that was nearby and we had mold issues as well from the water "wicking" up through the drywall.
Anyway, what I am trying to say is mine started to look like that so I tore it all out myself and redid it properly. I used Durock for the wet areas and green board for areas next to the Durock. I coated them with a roll on sealer after that. I hope that is on the first floor for you, as that needs to be ripped out completely and redone. Unfortunately, it will only get worse from here and you will, if you don't already, have mold issues guaranteed. Many people like to think they can do a shower pan but many can't,even the "pros". I even went to the point of making a "pre-pan" with concrete,(and even sealed it with the roll on sealant), that sloped down from the side walls to the drain and then installed the rubber pan on top of that. When the rubber pan is attached to the drain, especially on a flat floor, it needs to be done with a sealant at the drain, to prevent water from leaking underneath back to your walls. There are a lot of good videos on Youtube to give you an idea of what should be done the right way to prevent this from happening again. |

My buddy says:
"Non stable framing/cement base. Tile needs a stable base or it will crack. The only acceptable places for movement are 90° corners, which if too much will cause cracks in the grout joints, which can be cured with siliconized grout. Any cracks in tile are from an installation error, unless it's from an impact, like something getting dropped." |

Unless you are a seasons DIYer do not attempt to do a shower installation with tile, even if you educate yourself well. If you hire it out, educate yourself so you know what the right and wrong way to do it is, what materials, products and techniques are better, and what to avoid. I am all about DIY but doing a shower is something that's kept me from renovating my bathrooms so far. |
