Why do you not?

They are cheap, powerful, compact, and the lights or batteries can be recharged by USB charging ports.

I have some hand-held modlites. The throw is incredible, but the batteries still make me nervous.  I've seen those sumbiches burn!  That's the only thing keeping me from going all in. I'm getting there.

Who makes flashlights for those batteries?  Is that the same as a Streamlight SL-B50?
Link Posted: 12/8/2022 11:44:12 PM EDT

Because:

- Nobody beats SureFire’s user interface.
- My employer gave me a Streamlight.
- I use a headlamp more often than the above two, and it’s 18650.

Fenix makes quite a few models that use the 21700 batteries. 21700 batteries are also not proprietary unlike thr SL-b50, they are just a size or so up from an 18650.

Lots of choices here, and I've had fantastic service with ordering from them.

My new EDC light, Fenix PD36R, uses the 21700 (came with a rechargeable one).

I also have 3 other lights that use an 18650 (AR weapon light, headlamp, and previous EDC light).

EDC a Fenix UC35 that used an 18650. Great little light.

Really want a dual beam LEP though.

Only surefire I own is a first gen G2 Nitrolon that I've since LED converted and it has a Surefire rechargable kit in it  think I paid $20 for that light back when surefire was a tiny little brand on the table at the gun show

This. Headlights are where it's at. I have an 18650 NiteCore. It's my go-to. A little heavy, but it can goes from moon to blind you, and has a red mode. With the 18650, it lasts a week of camping without a battery change. It's tough as hell, has survived salt and freshwater immersions, drops, etc. It's so much better than a flashlight.

I also have an 18650 flashlight, but it sees very little use.

I keep 18650 Zebralights in the glovebox of every vehicle.

If I need to reach for a light from the glovebox, 99%  chance that having both hands free would be a plus.

Left them in vehicles 24/7/365 here in MI, from whatever the interior temps hit in the summertime, to ~ -15f in Winter (and tested them when they'd been coldsoaked all night in -12f to -15f temps. Yep, they still work at -15f).

I have a $20 amazon flashlight that uses 18650 batteries. It's called an Ultrafire WF-502b and it uses Surefire p60 compatible lamps.

I almost hate to admit it, but I love it so much that I carry it as my EDC and my Surefire's don't even leave the house anymore.

Anyone wanting to try one, I would suggest to only purchase the single mode model.

Same for me, old and slow to change.  This was my first flashlight.   I recently discovered these 18650's and Streamlight.  It really is worth the upgrade.

With the prices of batteries these days, the USB charging saves money.

I already do, two in fact, a Rein 2.0 and an OKW mated to a Surefire 640DF body.

I also have 18350 and 123's. Your thread is a weird flex about it because no matter which I chose out of the three, it's all meh to me and for different purposes so really there is not one true do it all answer here.

I've had 2 18650 Cree-head LED flashlights by Thorfire that I bought on Amazon because of a thread on ARFCOM a long time ago, 10+ years probably.

I have a Modlite 18650 handheld, 2 PL350's, 2 Modlite 18350 scout lites, an Arisaka 18350 scout with Malkoff head coming, 1 18650 Modlite Scout coming, a couple of Insight lights on other guns, Streamlights (3), 2 X300U LED, 1 X300 incandescent I think, it's fairly old. I have a SureFire Z2 combat light that I did a Malkoff LED drop-in for, and upgraded the tailcap to a McClicky. I have a 3-cell Maglite with Xenon bulb that has a Malkoff upgrade on its way, to include the rechargeable battery conversion to run on (2) 27100 or whatever they are.

Gave my buddy at work my old M961 weaponlight. I've been an upgrade binge for the SBR's and various stuff. Seriously thinking about a DBAL-A3 to slave with the LUNA illuminator I bought last summer to go on yet another gun.

Because I still prefer the convenience of disposable CR123 batteries.  Don’t need to worry about remembering to charge.  Don’t need to worry if my batteries are degrading over time.  If I start to get low, I toss them and grab more.  I have a huge Streamlight flashlight that came with rechargeables, but it’s not something I rely on for self defense or serious use.  Just a general purpose light that the kids play around with to find lost toys under the couches and whatnot.  It annoys me when they grab my Surefire lights and start wasting the batteries, so a rechargeable makes sense for the general purpose household light.  My headlamps and any other “work” lights use disposables.  I’ll be damned if I forget to charge a headlamp and need to use it immediately to fix something only to find out it’s not fully charged.  Keeping track of fully charged spare battery sets?  Nah, I’m good.

Take the leap. They're awesome. It's hard to beat the Slonik headlamps. There were some great deals on them in the Amazon thread in Team. They include the battery and recharge via USB, taking the guess work out. You can buy other 18650 batteries and a charger if you want spares.

18650 cells are common in cordless power tool batteries and laptop batteries
Broken tool batteries (broken as in dropped and busted plastics). Open and separate the cells and test them,  for laptops batteries the ones that just die had the pcb die in the pack and the cells are probably good
Get a good multi type and multi size smart charger one that can charge LI, niCad NiMh cells and run them in flashlights cheap
Amazon

I have used a single 18650 cell to power an older two C or D cell flashlights
With a pvc plastic tube or just cardboard rolled around a 18650 cell to keep it centered, that the cell will fit in and a spacer to make up the space in length can be almost any metal. Even aluminum foil ball compressed to a 18650 diameter cylinder to make a single 18650 cell equal two D cells in length.
With this it keeps the older flashlights in service and the cells last for years in storage without leaking

It means the cells have a protection circuit inside to hopefully keep them from running away (electrically) and doing bad things like bursting into major flames.
