In a second wave of strikes by the IDF in southern Lebanon this morning (25 Aug 2024), Hezbollah rocket launchers were destroyed west of Yater in what we exposed as a Hezbollah Military Zone two years earlier (05 Aug 2022). Pay attention to the involuntary ignition of a rocket after being struck by IDF ordnance. According to our assessment, #Hezbollah intended, in its original response that was disrupted, to carry out a combined bombardment attack against #Israel: an intensive rocket and UAV strike on northern Israel (hundreds of launches, not thousands) as a diversion and intentionally engaging the Israeli defense systems, while, simultaneously, firing several accurate missiles or heavy rockets or UAVs at security targets in central Israel. This, with the aim to fulfill Hezbollah’s equation: If Israel accurately hits a target in Beirut (Fouad Shakar in Dahiyeh), Hezbollah will accurately hit a high-quality target in the heart of Israel. Zeitoun was one of the first areas in north Gaza the IDF cleared. Unfortunately, the IDF doesn't have the numbers to "clear and hold".
An Israeli reserve soldier was killed during fighting in Gaza City earlier today, the IDF announces. The slain soldier is named as Master Sgt. (res.) Shlomo Yehonatan Hazut, 36, of the Jerusalem Brigade’s 9207th Battalion, from Ashdod. Another soldier was seriously wounded in the incident. According to an initial IDF probe, the soldiers were hit by an explosive device planted on a road in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, in a statement sent to diplomatic reporters which is attributable to a "political official," slams IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari for saying in a press conference tonight that the military is focusing on returning the hostages. "The choice of the IDF spokesman to mention in his statement this evening only one war goal -- while ignoring the rest of the war goals -- is in complete contradiction to the directives of the political echelon," the statement says. "The goals of the war were and remain: the return of our hostages, the destruction of the military and governmental capabilities of Hamas, the promise that Gaza will no longer be a threat to Israel, and the safe return of the residents of the north to their homes," the statement continues. Hagari in his press conference had said that "We continue to be committed to one central war goal, recovering the 109 hostages, and we will continue to act with all efforts in order to realize it."
A man aged 39 was slightly injured in the alleged ramming attack near the Ariel Junction in the West Bank, medics say. The man is being taken to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva with superficial wounds to his stomach, MDA says. Two Palestinian men in the car that allegedly attempted to ram into army posts along the road were shot, at least one of them dead.

I don’t think Hezbollah has the capability to afflict much harm on Israel anymore. They have been severely degraded the last 10 months. The US and Israeli intelligence is just too powerful to overcome for Hezbollah. Only way they would be able to do meaningful harm to Israel is if Iran launches everything and ties up Israel’s defenses.

 Institute for Study of War Backgrounder 25 August Summary of Hezbollah-IDF operations on 25 August and what might happen next Hezbollah conducted a drone and rocket attack on Israel on August 24 in response to Israel killing a senior Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr. Hezbollah fired 200-300 projectiles, including around 20 one-way attack drones, in two waves into Israel. Hezbollah fired rockets at 11 Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sites in northern Israel in the first wave, including a prominent IDF air defense and communications site on Mount Meron, which Hezbollah has targeted repeatedly since October 2023. Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah said that the rockets were meant to distract Israeli air defenses and enable the second wave to penetrate deeper into Israel. The second wave involved firing one-way attack drones targeting Ein Shemer base in Hadera and Glilot Base north of Tel Aviv. This tactic of using imprecise and indirect fire to distract air defenses and then using precision weapons to strike targets has become common across Iran and its Axis of Resistance in recent years. Ein Shemer base hosts major IDF air defense assets, while Glilot base has signals intelligence functions. The IDF intercepted some of the Hezbollah rockets in northern Israel and said Hezbollah failed to hit bases in central Israel. The IDF reported that an IDF Navy member was killed in the Hezbollah attack. (Early reports said he was killed by an Iron Dome interceptor). Hezbollah intended its attack to be much larger than it ended up being. A series of preemptive strikes in southern Lebanon 30 minutes before the attack was to begin destroyed “thousands” of Hezbollah rocket launchers and around 40 unspecified launch pads; the Air Force destroyed over 200 targets “within minutes.” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the IDF destroyed between 50 and 67 percent of the munitions that Hezbollah planned to use in the attack. Israeli officials said not all of the rocket launchers that Hezbollah positioned were meant for use in their attack. Hezbollah may have positioned more rocket launchers than it planned to use in order to obfuscate the direction and scale of its attack. Nasrallah gave a speech after the attack and outlined the factors that led Hezbollah to delay its attack until now. Nasrallah said that the United States and Israeli deterrent postures affected Hezbollah's decision making and also said Hezbollah and the Axis of Resistance delayed the retaliation to allow the ceasefire-hostage talks in the Israel-Hamas war to continue. Lebanese media say that there are apparently no injuries in the reported Israeli drone strike on a car near Sidon. The Hezbollah-linked al-Mayadeen outlet says the target of the strike survived, while al-Ahkbar reports that the car was empty when it was hit.
A Hamas rocket launcher used in an attack on central Israel last night was destroyed in an airstrike, the military says. The rocket fired by Hamas in the attack struck an open area near the city of Rishon Lezion. The terror group claimed to have attacked Tel Aviv. According to the IDF, the launcher was located near a school in southern Gaza's Khan Younis. The launch site had been spotted by troops of the 98th Division operating in the area, who directed a drone to strike it. The launcher, along with another structure used by the Hamas terrorists who fired the rocket, were targeted. The IDF releases footage of the strikes. The IDF says that secondary explosions were seen following the strike on the launcher, "indicating the presence of additional rockets in the launcher that was struck." Meanwhile, troops of the 98th Division operating in Khan Younis and on the outskirts of Deir al-Balah killed dozens of gunmen and located weapons in the past day, the army says. Further south, in Rafah, troops with the 162nd Division killed dozens more gunmen amid operations in the Tel Sultan neighborhood, according to the IDF. And in the Netzarim Corridor of central Gaza, reservists with the 252nd Division killed several more terror operatives with tank shelling, the military adds.
Five hundred transport planes and 107 ships have delivered more than 50,000 tons of armaments and military equipment from the United States to Israel since the start of the war, the Defense Ministry says. The military equipment delivered to Israel since the beginning of the war includes “armored vehicles, munitions, ammunition, personal protection gear, and medical equipment,” the ministry says. It says the deliveries are "crucial for sustaining the IDF's operational capabilities during the ongoing war." The "large-scale logistical effort" has been carried out by the ministry's Directorate of Production and Procurement, the ministry's mission to the US, the IDF's Planning Directorate, and the Israeli Air Force.

The Palestinian Authority health ministry says one Palestinian was killed and three others were injured after Israeli settlers opened fire in the West Bank village of Wadi Rahhal near Bethlehem. According to Palestinian media, dozens of Israeli settlers entered the village and attacked residents.
This is the third militant turned loose in November that has attacked Israelis and been killed. There are like many more who haven't been gunned down (yet).
Palestinian media report that among the dead in the IDF drone strike in Nur Shams is Jibril Jibril, a Hamas member who was released by Israel in a November deal with the terror group. The deal saw Israel release Palestinian terror convicts and detainees, mostly from the West Bank, in exchange for Israeli civilians abducted by the terror group on October 7. Jibril had been jailed for hurling explosive devices, stone throwing, and being a member of Hamas.  Attached File
The IDF publishes several infographics which it says show Hezbollah rocket launch sites used in yesterday's attack on northern Israel. Some 230 rockets and about 20 drones were fired in the attack. Israeli officials say that Hezbollah planned to fire hundreds more, and the IDF's preemptive strike took out more than half of the intended threats. Several suspected drones launched from Lebanon impacted the Upper Galilee earlier this evening, the IDF says. Several more apparent drones that were heading toward the Western Galilee from Lebanon were mostly shot down by air defenses, the IDF says. Just one impacted the area. There are no injuries in the attacks.
Daily Update, August 26, 2024 - 14:00 - Northern Arena 1. Over the past 24 hours, Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for one attack against Israel using suicide UAVs. 2. Additionally, a UAV was intercepted in the Jordan Valley this morning, which apparently crossed from Syrian territory. Responsibility for this event has not been claimed. 3. Yesterday (August 25), at around 4:30 AM, the IDF launched a preemptive strike aimed at thwarting a massive launch of missiles and rockets by Hezbollah toward northern and central Israel, in response to the assassination of Fuad Shakar in Beirut on July 30. Thousands of missiles loaded into launch tubes were positioned in southern Lebanon and more than 40 missile-loaded launching tubes were attacked by about 100 IDF fighter jets. 4. About an hour later, Hezbollah fired over 200 Grad rockets and around 20 suicide UAVs across northern Israel, most of them targeting civilian areas in the Western Galilee, Upper Galilee, and the Golan Heights, which are not evacuated. According to Hezbollah. 5. Additionally, the IDF strikes in Lebanon resulted in the death of an Amal movement operative in Khiam and two Hezbollah operatives in the At-Tiri area. (Amal is a militant movement made up mostly of Shia ; it was founded in 1974, 8 years before Hezbollah.) 6. These types of devices are called improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. Hazut was “the seventh soldier to fall in Gaza in four days,” Ynet reported. “Four of the fatalities were killed when IEDs detonated.” Hazut was in Battalion 9207 of the 16th Brigade. This area has been cleared numerous times in the past. The use of IEDs in Gaza has been growing over the last few months. Hamas has reverted to this method, along with other terrorist groups in Gaza, as a way to fight the IDF without using armed fighters. This is because Hamas lacks the manpower it had last October. It is now using the terrain to its benefit. It knows the area, so it can quietly sneak into homes and areas and leave explosives behind. It has been using this method increasingly. Terrorist groups are also increasing their use of explosives in the West Bank in areas such as Nur Shams, near Tulkarm, and Jenin and other areas. In addition, they may be seeking to expand the war into other areas of Israel.
Article mentioned in tweet Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah delivered a speech on Sunday about the Iranian-backed terrorist group’s attack on Israel earlier in the day. The attack was named “Operation Arbaeen Day” because it coincided with the end of a Shi’ite religious period called Arbaeen, he said. Hezbollah carried out the large attack on Israel to avenge the killing of Fuad Shukr, one of its senior commanders. Shukr was killed because of Hezbollah’s attack on Majdal Shams in July, which killed 12 children and teenagers. Hezbollah had acted alone, rather than coordinating a multifront attack with Iran and other proxies, he said. Hezbollah had decided not to target infrastructure and civilians; instead, it focused its attacks on IDF military sites, he added, citing an Israeli base at Glilot. Nevertheless, Hezbollah did not succeed in this attack. While the IDF said it had stopped 90% of Hezbollah’s attack via a preemptive strike, Hezbollah claimed it still fired 340 Katyusha rockets. It also launched drones from the Bekaa Valley, Nasrallah claimed. According to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Iran’s state media, “Nasrallah also stated that the truth of what happened in these operations will be known, despite the enemy’s secrecy, and that data shows a number of drones hit their targets, but the enemy has remained silent.” Hezbollah’s propaganda, as voiced by its leader, claimed that all its plans were achieved. “What the enemy bombarded today were empty valleys; therefore, the enemy’s claims of targeting ballistic missiles that were prepared to target Tel Aviv are baseless, and the launch pads of combat drones were not hit, and the Israeli attacks hit only two missile launchers,” IRNA reported, citing Nasrallah’s speech, which mentioned ballistic missiles and precision weapons. Hezbollah is trying to save face. It knows Israel has claimed a major success in preempting its attacks, and that the IDF says it destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers. Hezbollah wants to pretend that it emerged unscathed. This is the typical dance that Hezbollah has been doing for 10 months. “Nasrallah said that we announced that our response today is preliminary,” IRNA reported. War of attrition In essence, what Hezbollah is saying is that its plodding attacks will continue, and this war of attrition will continue. Hezbollah will continue to attack until there is a ceasefire in Gaza. Then it will revisit its demands, and it may even continue attacks after that due to the “open account” it believes it has due to the killing of Shukr. But it is clear that Hezbollah prefers to return to some semblance of quiet. It doesn’t want a large war. It also thinks that it benefits from this low-level war. It is putting on a brave face in a sense, despite its losses. It is showing that it can take the losses of a few men a week in this long war, and that it will recover. It is also indicating that it doesn’t view any of this with urgency. It doesn’t mind waiting for weeks or months to attack because it knows this puts Israel and the US on alert. Hezbollah believes it has achieved a lot just because it can put Israel on alert, and that in some cases, this might be enough for it to achieve a kind of victory. It has also caused Israel to evacuate the northern border, which for Hezbollah is a major accomplishment. Nasrallah’s speech revealed the overall sense that Hezbollah has that it doesn’t need to carry out more large attacks quickly. It can wait, and it will wait as Iran keys in other proxies, such as Syrian-based militias. One of those groups launched a drone at Israel, for instance. Yemen’s Houthis have also backed the Hezbollah attack, according to a statement at Beirut-based Al Mayadeen, a pro-Iranian news channel. Meanwhile, the Iranian regime is also signaling that it can hold off on its own claims it will retaliate against Israel. Iran’s foreign minister spoke with his Italian counterpart on Monday. “Iran’s foreign minister has reiterated his country’s pledge to punish the Zionist regime for assassinating Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran,” IRNA reported. Iran is also reaching out to Turkey and Egypt. “Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, have discussed bilateral relations and regional issues, including the Gaza war,” IRNA reported Sunday. |

The Air Force conducted a drone strike on Hamas official Nidal Hlehill in his vehicle near Abra, east of Sidon. The drone reportedly injured Hlehill but did not kill anyone. Iran and Axis of Resistance The Iraqi Resistance Coordination Committee met to establish a unified position regarding attacks targeting US forces. A source claimed that “most” leaders in attendance agreed that the pause in attacks targeting US forces must end. The committee discussed ways to “work against” the United States, including increasing the rate of attacks targeting US forces. Iranian-backed Iraqi militias have only conducted seven attacks targeting US forces since July 17, none of which have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq. Iranian-backed Iraqi militia Kataib Sarkhat al Quds, formerly known as Ashab al Kahf, announced that it had resumed its military operations targeting Israel after the six-day pause it had announced for the Arbaeen Pilgrimage. Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) forces deployed forces to Gulajo, Diyala Province, Iraq, after reports of ISIS activity in the area. Gulajo is in a disputed area between the Iraqi Federal Government and Kurdistan Regional Government. Unspecified Iranian-backed militias launched a drone from Syria into the Golan Heights. The IDF intercepted the drone near Hamat Gedar, on the Jordanian border in the southern Golan Heights. The European Union (EU) military mission in the Red Sea reported at least five fires on the main deck of a Greek-flagged oil tanker in the Red Sea. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, on August 24, that the United States is concerned (but not concerned enough to blast the Houthis) that the attacks on the Sounion could spill millions of barrels of oil into the Red Sea, causing a disaster four times the size of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The Houthis initially targeted the Greek-flagged vessel, the Sounion, on August 21. Israel- Iran conflict CTP-ISW continues to believe that an Iranian drone and missile strike targeting Israel is the most likely Iranian course of action. Iranian Armed Forces General Staff Chief Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri said on August 26 during a ceremony for the new Iranian Minister of Defense Brigadier General Aziz Nasir Zadeh that Iran and the Axis of Resistance will retaliate against Israel “separately and independently.” Iran will likely take lessons from Hezbollah’s attack to tailor its retaliatory strike. The IDF believes Hezbollah launched less than 50 percent of the number of munitions it intended to launch during its August 24-25 attack on Israel. Israeli Army Radio reported on August 26 that the IDF believes Hezbollah planned to launch 500 to 600 rockets at northern Israel and “dozens” of drones targeting central Israel in its attack. Hezbollah fired 200 to 300 projectiles, including approximately 20 one-way attack drones, into Israel during the attack. The IDF added that Hezbollah launched 90 percent of the rockets and drones used in its August 24-25 attack from civilian areas in Lebanon.

An Israeli hostage was rescued alive by IDF troops from a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip earlier today, the military announces. The rescued hostage is Qaid Farhan al-Qadi, 52, from a Bedouin community near the southern city of Rahat, who was working as a guard at a packing factory in Kibbutz Magen on October 7. Al-Qadi was abducted by Hamas terrorists from the nearby community of Mivtahim. Al-Qadi was found alive inside a tunnel by commandos of the Navy’s elite Shayetet 13 unit. The operation was led by the IDF Southern Command, Shin Bet security agency, and the IDF’s 162nd Division. He is said to be in good health. It is now believed that 104 of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of 34 confirmed dead by the IDF. Hamas released 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in late November, and four hostages were released before that. Eight hostages have been rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 30 hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the military as they tried to escape their captors. Hamas is also holding two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well as the bodies of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.
Farhan al-Qadi was alone in a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip where special forces located him earlier today. No other hostages or Hamas terrorists were alongside him, and troops did not face any resistance. It is believed that the Hamas guards had fled the area in which he was being held, or al-Qadi managed to escape his captors, but remained inside the tunnel. According to the IDF al-Qadi was not inside this tunnel for the entire ten months of captivity, and he is believed to have been moved around several times. |

An IDF soldier was lightly wounded in a Hezbollah drone attack on the Galilee Panhandle earlier this evening, the military says. Suspected drone infiltration sirens had sounded at 7:26 p.m. after at least one explosive-laden drone crossed into Israeli airspace from Lebanon, before impacting near the northern community of Beit Hillel, wounding the soldier. Hezbollah took responsibility for the attack. Meanwhile, the IDF says it carried out an airstrike against a building in southern Lebanon's Odaisseh earlier today, after spotting a cell of Hezbollah operatives there. This clearly poses a significant challenge for Israel, which must carefully weigh its options as it contemplates which senior terrorist it might have to release in a ceasefire deal with Hamas."
In his speech yesterday, Hassan Nasrallah revealed that the members of Iran’s axis had decided on separate responses following the assassinations of Fuad Shukr and Ismail Haniyeh. However, the statement by the new Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, regarding Iran’s future response, indicates that Iran still intends to respond to Haniyeh’s assassination and is only waiting for “the appropriate time and place.” It’s important not to underestimate Iran’s decision not to join Hezbollah’s response. A united response would have significantly increased the likelihood of causing damage to Israel and “balanced” the equation between Israel and Iran and Hezbollah. However, it seems that Iran’s decision stems from Tehran’s fear of the consequences of such a response. Tehran has been under intense pressure since Haniyeh’s assassination, including the unprecedented US military presence in the region, public messages from senior US officials, including President Biden, regarding the US determination to defend Israel, as well as reports of internal struggles in Tehran regarding the response, particularly emphasizing President Pezeshkian’s fear of a regional campaign. These challenges make it difficult for Tehran to make a decision in this context. The fear in Iran of being portrayed as the party responsible for destroying any chance of a ceasefire to preserve Hamas’s presence in the Gaza Strip influenced not only the delay in the response but also the decision not to join Hezbollah in its retaliation. It’s still unclear how Iran’s decision will affect the dynamics of the Axis, and particularly how the other Axis members, led by Hezbollah, will evaluate their commitment to the alliance after their desire to respond individually to Haniyeh’s assassination. It’s apparent that Iran has a separate set of considerations, and the assassination of Haniyeh is not equivalent to that of Shukr. Nonetheless, this decision aligns with reports of tensions between Iran and Hezbollah following Hezbollah’s reluctance to join the Iranian response to Mahdavi’s assassination, and these disagreements could potentially damage the unity within the Axis. In any case, it seems from the public statements that Iran is committed to responding to Haniyeh’s assassination. However, the continued American military presence in the region, the time that has passed since the assassination, and the decision to respond independently rather than with Hezbollah indicate that Iran is seeking a way to resolve the incident without escalating the situation in the region. Ultimately, there is still a significant probability that Iran will respond to Haniyeh’s assassination. The public commitment of its leaders, including the supreme leader of Iran, has led Tehran into a position from which it can’t easily retreat. This fact, along with the Houthis’ desire to seek revenge for the bombing in the Hodeidah Port, suggests the risk of a regional campaign remains, even after Hezbollah has completed its response to Shukr’s assassination. Yet, it seems that Tehran is puzzled over how to respond to Haniyeh’s assassination without becoming embroiled in a broader regional conflict. It’s crucial to remember that any response by Tehran, even if limited, against Israel carries the risk of escalating into a wider conflict. I think our government agencies who infight constantly for our tax money, along with the D-party and all of their aligned NGO's, along with their government unions and half of another party with their the lucrative quest for the "forever war" agenda all share a common vision. "Managed wars" brings them in votes, taxpayer $$, taxpayer funded kickbacks and power over all of us. One party may never win an election again but it brings it's predicted lackluster performance that is just good enough home to and in line with all the other sides, which is exactly what our unelected agency overlords who are really running the country desire. How's that for long run-on sentences?

The IDF releases footage of a drone strike in the West Bank's Far'a camp near Tubas this morning, which the military says killed four Palestinian gunmen who "endangered forces" carrying out a raid. Meanwhile in Jenin, another drone strike killed three gunmen, and two other armed Palestinians were killed while clashing with Border Police officers, the army says. IDF troops and Border Police officers have also been operating since last night in the Tulkarem area. So far amid the operation, the IDF says many explosive devices planted underneath roads were neutralized and weapons were seized.
The IDF releases footage of Monday's airstrike in the West Bank's Nur Shams camp, targeting a command room used by local terror operatives. The strike killed five Palestinian terror operatives, the IDF says, including Hamas member Jibril Jibril who was released in the November hostage deal.
For more than three years, we at @FDD have been warning about the growing danger of Iran-backed terrorist groups in the West Bank. I recently detailed the dangers of Iranian meddling in the West Bank and the branches of terrorist groups in the territory. While Israeli forces conduct near-daily counterterrorism raids, attacks on Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and civilian targets continue. Branches belonging to Islamic Jihad, the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, Hamas, and other armed groups not only continue to be operational but are expanding their presence in the West Bank. The FDD’s Long War Journal “Mapping Terrorism in the West Bank” project breaks down attacks carried out by armed groups between March 31, 2022, and June 13, 2024. Additionally, the project breaks down data to show attacks pre- and post-October 7, 2023. Notable figures from the tally reveal that Katibat Jenin, the Islamic Jihad’s Jenin branch, has been responsible for the majority of attacks against Israeli targets. The Lions’ Den has also conducted a significant number of attacks. However, that group has since ceased its activities following repeated Israeli counterterrorism raids against its leadership and members. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades’ Tulkarm Battalion has also demonstrated a capacity to launch a substantial number of attacks, with a total of 132 recorded incidents. Separately, LWJ’s mapped data highlight a concerning issue regarding the presence of numerous terrorist groups operating in the West Bank. While the infographic identifies 15 groups, many linked to known terrorist organizations, additional factions are also active. The data illustrate a marked rise in the number of armed cells, indicating a substantial uptick in terrorist activity in comparison to previous years when only a few militant groups were active in the West Bank. A significant development the infographic does not highlight is the substantial increase in the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against Israeli troops. Initially, Palestinian terrorist groups in the West Bank relied on automatic weapons, pipe bombs, and crudely rigged fire extinguishers. However, as the violence in the West Bank evolved, armed groups have grown in capability. For example, IED manufacturing labs have been established, creating more sophisticated and powerful explosives capable of causing significant damage to thinly armored Israeli military vehicles. Two notable examples of this trend are attacks in January and May of this year. On January 7, an Israel Border Police officer succumbed to injuries sustained in a roadside bomb explosion, which was claimed by Islamic Jihad’s Jenin branch. On May 5, a car bomb detonated against an Israeli bulldozer, with Islamic Jihad’s Tubas branch taking responsibility for the attack. These incidents demonstrate the evolving tactics of Palestinian terrorist groups and the growing sophistication of their explosive devices. Iran is arming West Bank terrorist groups Iran has been advocating for arming Palestinian terrorist groups in the West Bank since 2014. In August 2022, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Chief Hossein Salami stated that the West Bank was “being armed” against Israel. He repeated the claim less than a year later, hinting that the Iranian regime was involved in the surge of West Bank violence. “But invisible hands have armed the West Bank, and you [now] see modern automatic rifles and automatic weapons in the hands of the Palestinians,” said Salami. Salami’s words were not mere rhetoric. A significant indicator that the status quo had changed in the West Bank was that armed groups increasingly clashed with Israeli troops, and shooting attacks against IDF posts and Jewish communities became prevalent. Iran’s strategy to arm Palestinian terrorist groups involved employing its proxies and networks of clients in the region to smuggle arms to the West Bank. In September 2023, a senior Israeli military official confirmed to LWJ that Lebanese Hezbollah was involved in the plot. Moreover, on March 25, the Shin Bet said it had thwarted an Iranian plot to smuggle advanced weapons into the West Bank. The smuggling network involved two units from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a senior Fatah official in Lebanon. The Iranian regime has demonstrated a shrewd ability to identify areas of weak governance in the region and leverage its proxies to exploit them. One such example is the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, which has a troubled history of corruption and declining popularity. Recognizing an opportunity, Iran initiated a substantial campaign to arm and support its existing proxies in the West Bank, creating a new “resistance” front on Israel’s doorstep. This development has presented a serious security challenge, as armed Palestinian groups supported by Iran continue to pose a threat despite three years of perpetual Israeli efforts to mitigate it.

Amid an ongoing IDF operation in the West Bank's Far'a camp, near Tubas, troops located what the military describes as a command room used by local terror operatives embedded within a mosque. The site had numerous surveillance cameras hooked up to television screens, which according to the IDF was used by terror operatives to track Israeli forces. A video from an IDF drone shows the entrance to the mosque, the walls of which are plastered with "martyr posters." The video also shows equipment that the IDF says are used to build explosive devices. Further inside the mosque, several primed explosive devices were found, according to the IDF. This evening, Palestinian media report that the mosque was blown up.
The body of an Israeli soldier who was killed and abducted by Hamas on October 7, was recovered by the military from the southern Gaza Strip overnight, the IDF announces. At the request of the family, the soldier's name is not yet permitted for publication. Following the overnight operation, 103 of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of 33 confirmed dead by the IDF. Hamas released 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in late November, and four hostages were released before that. Eight hostages have been rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 31 hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the military as they tried to escape their captors. Hamas is also holding two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well as the bodies of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.
Fighter jets carried out an airstrike against a building in southern Lebanon's Odaisseh earlier today, where a group of Hezbollah operatives were spotted, the IDF says. The military says additional airstrikes were carried out against Hezbollah infrastructure in the Ain al-Tineh area, located about 20 kilometers from the Israeli border. Hezbollah observation posts in Odaisseh and Kafr Kila were also struck today, the IDF adds.
In a rare admission, the IDF confirms carrying out a drone strike in Syria earlier today, killing a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative. According to the IDF, the airstrike on the Syrian side of the Beirut-Damascus highway, near the border between Lebanon and Syria, killed Fares Qasem. The military says Qasem is a prominent member of Islamic Jihad's operations unit. "Qasem was tasked with building operational plans for the PIJ terror organization in Syria and Lebanon, and took a central part in the recruitment of Palestinian terrorists to the Hezbollah terror organization, for the purpose of carrying out terror operations from Lebanon against the State of Israel," the IDF says. The IDF says that in recent years, Hezbollah, with Iranian funding, has been recruiting Palestinians to the terror organization to attack Israel. Two more PIJ operatives were killed in the strike, along with Hezbollah operative Muhammad Taha. The IDF says the four were driving from Syria to Lebanon to carry out operations on behalf of Hezbollah.
A 3km-long Hamas tunnel located in the Netzarim Corridor area of the central Gaza Strip was recently demolished by combat engineers, the IDF says. The tunnel had been located and later demolished by the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit, along with reservists of the Jerusalem Brigade, the latter of which is currently stationed in the corridor. According to the IDF, part of the tunnel was destroyed during the 2014 Gaza war, but over the years Hamas worked to rebuild it. The tunnel did not cross into Israeli territory, the military clarified.

The Center's director has an interesting back story--his brother was one of the founders of Islamic Jihad; the Israelis killed him in Malta 30 years ago.
The IDF has recovered Hamas documents from the Gaza Strip that it says prove the terror group has been secretly falsifying the results of polls conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR). Still, the IDF says that the documents do not prove that PCPSR was cooperating with Hamas, but rather that the terror group was conducting clandestine actions to fraudulently influence the results of the polls. PCPSR is run by prominent Palestinian pollster Khalil Shikaki. According to the IDF, the documents it recovered in Gaza "prove an extensive effort by the terror organization to falsify the results of [the PCPSR] polls, to create a false representation of the Gazan public's support for the terror organization, especially after the massacre on October 7." "These documents are part of a systematic process, the purpose of which is to disguise the collapse of the organization, and the collapse of public support for it," the IDF accuses. The military says the documents "emphasize the importance that the Hamas terror organization sees in the results of the polls, to falsify Palestinian support and to influence the Palestinian public and Arab and international public opinion." An alleged Hamas document released by the IDF shows the results of a PCPSR poll from March 2024, with both the original data and the falsified numbers. "The documents show that the falsified results are in favor of the organization and its leaders, with an emphasis on Yahya Sinwar," the military says. The documents released by the IDF also show that the falsified results show greater support among the Gazan public for Hamas's October 7 onslaught.
Hamas's Rafah Brigade has "collapsed" as a result of the IDF's ongoing offensive in the city in the southern Gaza Strip, military sources say. The remarks come a week after Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the Rafah Brigade had been defeated. According to the IDF, around 80% of Hamas's tunnels along the Philadelphi Corridor, the Egypt-Gaza border area, have been neutralized. The military has also seen Hamas operatives increasingly trying to escape from tunnels in Rafah, and flee north to the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone. The IDF has successfully been ambushing Hamas gunmen in the area who have tried to flee, military sources add.

Several explosive-laden drones launched from Lebanon impacted in the northern Golan Heights a short while ago, according to the IDF. Suspected drone sirens had sounded in the northern communities of Ein Qiniyye, Kela and Sha'al amid the incident. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
A Palestinian Islamic Jihad intelligence officer was killed in a drone strike in southern Gaza's Rafah yesterday, the IDF says. The IDF says it carried out a strike against a group of gunmen who hijacked an aid convoy in the southern Gaza Strip earlier today. According to the military, a convoy of aid trucks from the American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera) organization entered the southern Rafah area with IDF coordination. During the drive, "armed men took over a vehicle at the front of the convoy (a jeep) and began to lead it," the military says. Shortly after the hijacking, the IDF says it was able to determine that it could strike only the car with the gunmen, without harming the rest of the convoy. It then carried out the strike. "There was no damage to the other vehicles in the convoy and it reached its destination according to the plan. The attack on the armed men removed the threat of them taking over the humanitarian convoy," the IDF says. The military says representatives from the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) unit spoke with members of Anera, who "confirmed that all the members of the organization who were part of the convoy, and the humanitarian aid, were safe and sound and reached their destination safely." The commander of Hamas's military wing in the West Bank city of Jenin was killed, along with two other operatives, in clashes and drone strikes this morning, the IDF, Shin Bet, and police say. According to the military, amid an ongoing operation in the northern West Bank, troops spotted a cell of gunmen in a car in the Jenin area town of Zababdeh. Inside the car was Wissam Hazem, the head of Hamas's terror network in Jenin. Undercover Border Police officers opened fire at the car, killing Hazem, while the other two gunmen fled, the joint statement says. A short while later, a drone struck and killed the pair. According to Israel, Hazem was involved in numerous shooting and bombing attacks, and was advancing additional attacks. The other two gunmen, killed by the drone, are named by the IDF as Maysara Masharqa and Arafat Amer. The military says they were Hamas members working under Hazem, and were also involved in shooting attacks, including against Israeli communities near the West Bank security barrier. Inside the car and on the bodies of the terror operatives, the IDF says it recovered assault rifles, a handgun, and other weapons. No troops were hurt in the incident.
Border Police release footage of this morning's exchange of fire in the West Bank town of Zababdeh near Jenin, during which senior Hamas commander Wissam Hazem was killed. Another two Hamas members in the car fled and were killed moments later in drone strikes.
The IDF has wrapped up a three-week-long operation in the southern Gaza Strip, during which the military says it demolished six kilometers worth of tunnels, killed over 250 gunmen, and recovered the bodies of six hostages. The IDF says it killed two Palestinian terrorists as two suspected car bombs were detonated in the Gush Etzion area of the West Bank this evening, In the first incident, a car exploded at a gas station near the Gush Etzion junction. Troops dispatched to the scene shot dead a terrorist who had arrived in the vehicle, and attempted to attack them, the military says. Footage posted to social media shows the moment that the suspect was shot. Two men were moderately and lightly wounded by gunfire amid the incident, medics say, likely as a result of friendly fire while forces shot the alleged terrorist dead. In the second incident, a Palestinian terrorist rammed a car into a guard at the entrance to the settlement of Karmei Tzur, lightly injuring him, according to medics. The IDF says troops dispatched to the scene shot dead the terrorist, and are continuing to search for additional possible suspects. The car used in the attack at Karmei Tzur also exploded, though the IDF is still looking into the circumstances. The IDF also says that it cannot confirm the two attacks are related at this stage.
The commander of the IDF's Etzion Regional Brigade, Col. Gal Rich, was slightly wounded amid tonight's attempted bombing attacks in the West Bank. Rich was hit in the arm by gunfire while troops shot dead a Palestinian terrorist at a gas station at the Etzion Junction. He is being treated by medics and is said to be in good condition. An image from the scene shows the brigade commander investigating the attack.
During the incident at Karmei Tzur, IDF troops opened fire at the terrorist who breached the entrance to the settlement. One of the members of the local security team in his own car crashed into the terrorist's car, and killed the Palestinian assailant. A barrage of some 40 rockets was fired from Lebanon at the Western Galilee earlier tonight, the IDF says. The military says that some of the rockets were intercepted and others impacted the area, though no injuries were caused. It adds that troops shelled the launch sites with artillery. An explosive laden drone launched from Lebanon an hour ago struck near the northern community of Beit Hillel, the IDF says. There are no injuries in the attack. Sirens had sounded in several communities in the Galilee Panhandle amid the incident. Separately, the IDF says it struck a building in southern Lebanon's Markaba where a group of Hezbollah operatives were spotted. Fighter jets carried out the strike on the building a short while after the Hezbollah members were identified by troops of the 869th Combat Intelligence Collection Unit.
The IDF's ongoing major operation in the northern West Bank is now largely focusing on the Jenin area, after raids in Tulkarem and Far'a concluded. Troops this morning raided the Jenin's refugee camp, where they neutralized dozens of explosive devices that were planted along the roads, according to the military. There have been fierce clashes between IDF troops and Palestinian gunmen in the Jenin area this morning. So far amid the major operation launched earlier this week, the IDF says troops have killed at least 26 gunmen and detained another 30 wanted Palestinians.
Israeli forces have detained six Palestinians who are suspected to have been involved in last night's dual car bombing attacks in the West Bank. Their connection to the attacks in the Gush Etzion area is being looked into. The IDF has meanwhile encircled Hebron and towns in the area, where the two terrorists came from, as it searches for additional suspects and investigates the attack. This morning, troops demolished a bomb-making lab in Hebron. The military says that there is no fear of a third car bomb -- as some media outlets reported -- and the incident in Gush Etzion is considered to have ended. The two cars that exploded in Gush Etzion are believed by the IDF to have been packed with makeshift explosive devices.
The IDF and Shin Bet believe that the two Palestinian terrorists who attempted to carry out concurrent car bombing attacks in the Gush Etzion area of the West Bank last night were coordinated. The two terrorists set out together from the Hebron area and headed toward the Etzion settlement bloc to carry out the attack at two locations, according to the initial probe. One car bomb was set off at a gas station at the Gush Etzion junction, while the second terrorist breached into the Karmei Tzur settlement and his car exploded there. Both terrorists were killed. Their identities and affiliations are not immediately known. At the gas station, a soldier was moderately wounded and a reservist officer who is the head of a local security team was lightly hurt as troops opened fire at the terrorist. Israeli TV Report: New IDF assessment shows some 6,000 Gazans invaded Israel on Oct. 7. The border was breached in 119 places--previous reports described 60 breaches in the Israel-Gaza fence.

New assessments indicate twice as many Gazans breached the border into Israel on October 7 than previously believed, Channel 12 reported Saturday, citing data compiled by the Israel Defense Forces’ Gaza Division. Some 3,800 terrorists from the Hamas terror group’s elite Nukhba forces smashed through the border fence, the report said, among a total of 6,000 Gazans who crossed into Israel that day. Hitherto, figures made public indicated that some 3,000 Hamas-led terrorists participated in the invasion, massacre and hostage-taking that day. That number did not take into account Gazans who crossed the fence and participated in the atrocities but were not Hamas members, nor did it differentiate between Nukhba terrorists and other Hamas terrorists. It was unclear from the report what the status was of the 2,200 other Gazans who infiltrated Israel on October 7. Presumably, many were civilians, as extensive footage of the onslaught showed many enter to loot and take part in the assault, while others were likely members of other Hamas units or other terrorist organizations such as the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The TV report also said that the border was breached in 119 spots — again, about double the previously widely cited figure of 60 breaches in the Gaza-Israel fence. Additionally, 1,000 terrorists inside Gaza were involved in firing rockets at Israel that day, the report said, meaning that a total of some 7,000 Gazans took part in the onslaught. Some 5,000 rockets were fired at Israel on October 7, with 3,000 of them in the first four hours of the onslaught, according to the IDF. Channel 12 said the data was submitted to IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi. In response to the report, Channel 12 quoted the IDF Spokesman’s Office as saying that the IDF’s operational probe of the events surrounding October 7 has not yet been completed, and is continuing in accordance with situational assessments and operational needs. Upon completion, the findings will be made public, the spokesman’s office said. The October 7 massacre saw terrorists kill some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnap 251, all while committing widespread atrocities and mass sexual assault. Over 350 people were killed at a music festival and whole families were executed in their homes.
The IDF says it has located several bodies in the Gaza Strip, which may belong to Israeli hostages. "At this stage the forces are still operating in the area and carrying out a process to extract and identify the bodies, which will last several hours," the military says. The IDF calls on the public not to spread unverified rumors.
An Israeli soldier was killed and three others were wounded during clashes with Hamas gunmen in the West Bank city of Jenin this morning, the military announces. The slain soldier is named as Staff Sgt. Elkana Navon, 20, a squad commander in the Bislamach Brigade’s 906th Battalion, from Petah Tikva. According to an initial IDF probe, troops carrying out a raid in Jenin encountered two gunmen, considered to be prominent members of the Hamas terror group. The soldiers exchange fire with the two terror operatives from a close range, killing both of them. Four soldiers were hit by the gunmen, including Navon who later died. One of the wounded troops, an officer, is listed in serious condition.

On August 21, 2024, Hezbollah published a video of a cannon firing from a closed building with an opening in the roof (pictured on the left). This attack was carried out on August 18, 2024, by #Hezbollah aimed at the border town of Shtula using a M101 Howitzer. The M101 is a 105mm light cannon with a range of 8 to 15 km depending on the type of shell and firing angle. The M101 Howitzer is American-made and widely used by US forces in World War 2, Korea, and Vietnam as you can see in the comparison photo on the right. It can be assumed that the cannon reached Hezbollah in some way from the Lebanese army. At this point, it is a relatively old weapon. Western weapons reach Hezbollah in different ways, but the potential for it to leak from the Lebanese Army is high and is even reflected in the potential spillover of anti-aircraft missiles, anti-tank missiles, additional military equipment, and other Western military technologies. Today Ukraine announced the elimination of the Iranian Moussa Sharfi Molassari in Russia. According to Iranian opposition sources, Molassari belonged to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) and was responsible for the transfer of the Shahed and Mohajir UAVs to Russia. Humanitarian aid groups will begin a mass polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip on September 1. The head of the UN World Health Organization operations in the Palestinian territories Rik Peeperkorn said that the campaign will begin in central Gaza. West Bank The IDF continued raids in the northern West Bank for the fifth consecutive day. The IDF expanded its operations to Jenin refugee camp on August 31, destroying dozens of IEDs planted along the roads entering the camp. Palestinian militias, including the al Aqsa Martyrs‘ Brigades, Hamas, and PIJ, engaged Israeli forces with small arms and IEDs near the camp and in several other locations in Jenin. At least two Palestinian fighters attempted to carry out car bombing attacks in the Gush Etzion area of the West Bank on August 30. According to an initial IDF probe, the two militants set out together from the Hebron area towards Gush Etzion–a cluster of Israeli settlements south of Jerusalem–to carry out coordinated attacks in two locations. One fighter set off a car bomb at a gas station at the Gush Etzion junction. The fighter shot at IDF forces who then killed him. The second fighter breached the entrance to the Israeli Karmei Tzur settlement, located within the Gush Etzion area, approximately twenty minutes later. The fighter tried to run over the security guard at the Karmei Tzur settlement entrance, resulting in a car chase with Israeli security guards. The explosive device in the attacker‘s vehicle detonated during the exchange of fire; IDF forces shot and killed the second fighter. The two car bombs were packed with ”makeshift explosive devices” and packed with nails and screws. An initial IDF investigation found that the two explosives came from the same bomb-making lab. The IDF located and destroyed an explosives laboratory in Hebron on August 31. The Palestinian Authority Health Ministry said that two Hebron residents were responsible for the attack. The IDF and Shin Bet are investigating whether the attack was carried out by ”foreign threats.” Israeli security officials believe a terrorist cell operating in Hebron intends to carry out additional attacks. The bodies of Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Master Sergeant Ori Danino were found and recovered yesterday. They were all taken hostage on October 7 and were murdered by the Hamas terrorist organization while in captivity in Gaza. The IDF and ISA send their heartfelt condolences to the families. Israeli security forces are operating with all means to bring home all the hostages as fast as possible.

Ill be in the West Bank in about 48 hours.
Oddly enough there are places in the west bank (while very fucking hostile) that are utterly amazing. As you head toward Jerico...deep in "should not be here" country. There is a desolate hill that has a view of a lot of the ancient Jerusalem skyline. I was sitting on that hill eating some wicked good falafel soon after the war started, enjoying one of the most peaceful moments of my life....until it wasnt. I had to unass the area really fast. Its all such a shame. |
