I suppose you know, Bob, if I ever see you again I'm just going to start shooting and figure it was self-defense.

Does he hold the record for appearing in the most movies or does someone else? Or maybe appearing with dialog, not just standing there? Seems like he ought to, IMO.

Agree,  Hackman kills that whole movie, kinda fits that the dominant personality is a hurting father, motivated to find his forgotten son.

1977, great movie. Up there with Zulu.

Scrolled down through IMDB seeing what's available to stream for free and came across Twighlight. Paul Newman is the main character but it also has Hackman and Garner. I surprised to see a young Reese Witherspoon topless right off the bat and then Susan Sarandon topless in a reflection soon after.

Might be interesting.

Not even close to the top at 69.

The only actors to have starred in over 200 movies:
Ward Bond (200 movies)
Christopher Lee (211 movies)
Danny Trejo (215 movies)
Danny Glover (219 movies)
John Carradine (222 movies)
Gertrude Astor (276 movies)
Eric Roberts (455 movies)

He's definitely one of the best though.

Thanks for the confirmation. Anytime I see thread titles in GD like the OP's, which feature the name of a well-known actor over the age of 70 or so, I assume the actor in question has just passed away.

Gene Hackman was acting in self-defense when he slapped a homeless man who had “aggressively” approached him and his wife as the couple strolled in Santa Fe’s downtown plaza on Tuesday, police say.

“At 1:30 in the afternoon we had a male named Bruce Becker, who is a homeless male, call police and say he had been beaten up by Gene Hackman,” Sgt. Andrea Dobyns of the Santa Fe Police Department tells The Hollywood Reporter.

"I suppose you know, Bob, if I ever see you again I'm just going to start shooting and figure it was self-defense."

and i remember seeing an interview with him or clint saying he didnt want to take that role, didnt want to do a western. clint talked him into it.

hackman did indeed play good and bad guys both very well, his characters had good range. i liked him in runaway jury and the firm

and there may be other actors who have more appearance credits, but its hard to find someone who has so many roles in well known and highly regarded movies over a long time. same for jeff bridges and robert duvall

Just saw an old flick where Hackman was less known and had third billing after Candace Berger.  The Hunting Party is about a rich man, Brandt Ruger, whose wife is kidnapped by bank robbers.  When Ruger learns of it, his party which is armed with scope equipped Sharps Rifle (they're actually Martini Henrys) goes hunting for the bank robbers instead of the big game.   They use their long range guns to their advantage and pick off the robbers one by one.

The director can't count because at one point the robbers are down to five but when they ride into a Mexican village (I think the set was used in one of Eastwood's Spaghetti Westerns) they're back up to ten.
