Damn, wasn't THIS movie an example of power run amok!  It starred Malcolm McDowell... well, YOU remember him.

Perfect casting there, I would say.  He started out as a sweet, innocent young man... and then he was abruptly introduced to just how brutal, savage, & insane that level of power can get.  Who among us, faced with that, could do better?  As the old saying goes, "Power corrupts.  Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

But then, there is also this:

"It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power."
-David Brin

As our good bud Marcus Aurelius said:

"Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones. I am not afraid."
-Marcus Aurelius

ANYhoo, fuck philosophy, let's have some haut Roman orgy T&A!!!!

Hey, it's the lady from Red.

Read somewhere she enjoys "taking her kit off" for movies.

I never saw it, was too much I think for even my parents. Clockwork Orange I've seen dozens of times though.

Caligula was a nice concept to bring to life, but the movie just isn’t very good.  And I’m a big McDowell fan.

Guccione couldn't decide if he wanted to bankroll porn or a historical epic, and the movie is bad at both.  Though has some infamous, and frankly unintentionally hilarious scenes:  the combination combine/decapitation machine, the scene where McDowell really gets "into it" ahem.

I thought the movie was terrible. It was a movie that wanted to be a porn, or vice versa.

I read A Clockwork Ornge while I was a young sailor in Great Lakes.  I enjoyed the book so much I rode the train into Chicago to see the movie.  I enjoyed the movie as well.  I noticed the general audience and I seemed to have different emotions for the same scenes.

Penthouse did a whole layout on the movie back in the day. Oh the things you find when you're 15 and curious.

Never saw the movie. The porn looked pretty cheesy.

The mainstream actors weren't aware of the porn scenes until the movie was released. The PG scenes were edited to include the porn. For example there was a scene where McDowell is looking at his dogs in the original. In the released version the cut to the dogs was replaced with a porn scene.
McDowell was not pleased

I saw the unedited version.  It was x-rated.  I mean, really x-rated.  Very explicit IIRC, but the explicit parts were brief.

I think the guy that owned Penthouse was the producer for the movie.

It was supposed to be a crossover movie. To make lightly X-rated movies kinda main stream.

Yeah, there’s a few memorable bits.  The scene where McDowell checks the bride and groom’s virginity had me thinking it was indeed good to be the king.

Interesting. I believe the Penthouse guy produced the whole thing, so I'd imagine a lot of internal promotion would have been involved.

Edit. Looks like that connection was already addressed.

Seen it a long time ago. Was really nothing special, nice looking girls and set was it. Only scene that stuck with me, was a guy with a funnel in his mouth and they poured liquid while his junk was tied off.
I Claudius, an old Roman pbs series was better and had more nudity.

This.

The bigger issue was Caligula was likely sexually abused as a kid by one of his Caesar-relatives.  Nero, maybe? He was batshit crazy, made his horse a senator, yes, sexually obsessed even for the Romans & abused his power ad lib.

His Praetorian guard really did kill him.  Why it took so long was my only question.

I saw Clockwork Orange in the theater when I was 12.  I looked much older, at the time of release nobody asked for ID.

As pre-teens way back in the late 70s, we found that issue in a dry irrigation ditch. Yup, it was QUITE titillating.

Was that the Marky one?

I used to watch anything he was in after cable tv bestowed the gift of A Clockwork Orange.  A film that's cemented itself as my all time #1.  Kubrick said he wouldn't have done the movie if he couldn't get McDowell.

Tinto Brass's cutting room floor surely had better parts than anything in the film he wasn't involved with.

I ordered the X rated cut off Amazon of all places a few years ago to watch with the wife.  We made it most of the way through but it was a mix of hard core porn and hilariously stupid violence.  I may pop it in the player and try to watch by myself one night.

I would say to watch it once, supposedly they shot the movie then the director inserted a bunch of X-rated porn into the final release, the original was definitely a hard R though.
