The husband of one of my receptionists is a tile-layer for all the new apartments/houses. The guy recently went 3 weeks without a single job.

Well the obvious things are weighing all of us down. Groceries, fuel, vehicle maintenance and repair.

But not everyone ran out and bought a $60,000 truck because loans were easy to secure.
Or bought a house at double its value.

Just because loans were “cheap” didn’t mean you could afford it.

That was the point I was trying to make.

Could be a combination of things.  I think appliances are very cheap in price (and quality) right now.  I also think that any skilled work is ridiculously priced right now.  If my fridge went out I'd probably go down and spend $1500 or  so for a new one which would include delivery and hauling the old one off.  I'd expect repair work on an old one to be half the price as new so why not just get a new one?

As for the skilled labor being nuts I had a 20 year old 40gal side vent water heater lose it's motor.  Motor/fan assembly wasn't obtainable and I needed it fixed (parents house) as they were out of hot water.  3 quotes and each was over $3,000.   I settled for the lowest at $3100.  New Bradford White side vent.

Steel seems to be slowing down - carbon and stainless.   We don’t get much conversion or roll rolling business the past month or so.  Dropped off like a cliff
However the specialty metals like nickel and titanium - we cannot make enough of it.   Like someone is getting ready for something.  ..

I work for a cancer hospital and unfortunately we’re busy as usual with patient volume increasing.

My buddy runs a shipping/trucking logistics firm and for April they only had $3100 in revenue when it’s normally $20k-$25k for this time of the year. When trucking slows down that is a tell tale sign the economy is hurting.

I see this a lot with my company. Customer calls in saying their service guy told them the whole appliance needs to be replaced. In the end a $100 part fixes the problem.

Labor and mark up on parts is another issue. Customer called to verify a part number before he gave the service guy the okay to do the repair because of the cost. His quote was $2400. The part was only $800. They did a 100% mark up on the part and quoted labor at $800. I told the guy to buy the part then call me and I would talk him through the installation. It was a 15 minute job that involved unplugging 10 molex connections, put the new part in place then plug it back up.

I am lucky, I have contracts that will carry me another year, I bid work out 1-2 years out. But I am also a 10 mil a year commercial electrical contractor. We are actually growing with what we do, but we are in a spot where not many electrical contractors can handle 3-7 mil jobs.

I've noticed this as well.  Client calls are less frequent, caseload getting lighter, less frequent appointments.  It all equals a smaller paycheck or more variations.  Which means we have to cut back on other luxury spending.

It's also seems like people all over are complaining about their pay stagnating, lousy raises, wanting to jump jobs for higher pay, but not finding new jobs available.

I think we're at the beginning still of these economic rumblings and not near the end.  People make less, it doesn't go as far, they can't buy as much, those companies make less income, lay off employees or offer shittier products/services, and quality of life goes down. The government prints more money, offers more free shit, adds to the debt and weakens the dollar, "helping," by making the mess worse.  This roller coaster is probably going to get real bumpy.  But at least employers have to use the wrong-pronouns for people.  Real important shit.

Our business is experiencing the same thing. We normally get 25-45 calls a day. We get days with ZERO calls. Still getting enough apts to mostly stay busy. But it feels like a recession.

When trump was president. We would have 5-12 apts a day. It’s quite a bit different under Biden.

I’m conflicted. One one hand I cannot fathom how people have the income they appear to have. On the other hand I’ve been to both Orlando and Las Vegas in the last 3 months and everything is packed.

We have a great household income and we just can’t understand how people are able to spend so much.

He does, but the situation was unwinnable.  NY and CA have the biggest populations in the country and their state and local governments were going to shut down the economy as an economic weapon against Trump no matter what he did.
