Ask ANY veterinarian
Possums can't bite you and leave any damage, they don't have the jaw structure or muscles to hurt you. The teeth are mostly for show! For God's sake please leave it alone |

I had a possum family move in under my old house so I trapped and relocated them. They put on quite a show with the hissing and teeth but they are not as mean as you think. Raccoons on the other hand are very different and you will soon have those if you don't stop feeding the feral cats.

Keep the possum, toss the cats.

Could not get to sleep, just went out to check on Possum and baybays . . . . SHE IS GONE!!! WTF???? And I was all excited about a new friend around here . . . what a bummer. Also, the fucking cats are swarming around the empty basket like fucking sharks in chummed water. Attached File Cats swarming in chummed water Attached File |

If you keep food out for the cats, she will be back. She just needed a meal and a nap. She won't sleep in that basket during the day, she found somewhere dark.
But she will be back. Food is to easy and mouths to feed. |
|
|
Ticks or not, they will sniff out rodent urine trails and eat them, dead or alive. Great to have around.

Oh look in the basket good. If one wasn't ready she will leave it to save the rest.
Could be why the cats are so interested |

I had one as a pet as a child.
It had fallen out of a tree in the backyard when it was young, so I kept it and raised it for a while. I even brought it to school for show & tell in the 2nd grade. Thanks for the photos, brings back memories. |

I picked it up by the tail and put it in a rabbit hutch that was vacant. My dad told me to kill it and sell the hide when we took coon hides to the local guy that bought them. I did and I think he gave me a dollar for it, possibly threw it away after we left. I leave them alone now that I know better. View Quote |

We just saw one walking across our yard.
According to the Internet they don’t stay in one place long. Maybe move the condo away from the house until the family clears out? Last summer we had one living under our deck. I used a live trap and took it to a friend’s house in another county. Now I’m wondering if I didn’t take it far enough away, and this is the same one. I hate to kill an animal that is supposedly harmless, but I’m not risking the life of my 13 pound Maltese either. I feel your pain OP. |

I have the same Sony 5 disk changer! It only gets used during Christmas season. We load it with Christmas CDs and hit “track shuffle”. I can’t believe it’s still working after all these years. |

I shoot every possum i see or find in my traps. I have guinea birds that lay nests of 30+ eggs. A possum will destroy all the eggs and the birds will go make a nest somewhere else,,,which i have to find to get the eggs. Guinea nests are hard to find here.

It grabbed ahold of the end of the glove by my wrist and I guarantee that fucker would've broken skin. Their teeth are very sharp. How the hell would they eat rodents if their bite can't do damage? |

Definitely get it though with chickens or any ground birds. we had some hard boiled eggs sit in the fridge too long, and they were a big hit with the possums and one raccoon that will come around can confirm what one other poster was saying that their mouths are not setup to inflict bite damage on humans. I also threw it a block of mexican feta cheese, and it was struggling to break cold apart cheese |

Personally, I'd just move the box and let 'em be. I used to be all about killing possums when they first showed up here, now they're about the one nuisance animal I will leave...and other than getting into unsecured feed or whatever they really don't cause many problems.
I've heard it both ways on the tick thing and after looking up actual (peer-reviewed) research studies it's just not true. However, they are nature's vacuum cleaner and do a very good job at their role in the food chain. Last one I had to kill was coming to a front door multiple times a day when there were other domestic animals with babies right there (and a food source, of course...) I actually walked right up to it and grabbed it by the tail, then carries it away from the house and shot it in the head. They're just not aggressive no matter how they snarl and hiss. Regardless of what you choose, you move those babies and she'll move too. |
|
|
Yeah, you were a lot more civil with the possum than I would have been. I wouldn't have killed it, I would have relocated it and her joeys 10 miles from my house asap.

As a word of caution about a possums ability to bite you, they can and will.

POSSUM UPDATE
Well, she has taken her gang of kids and hidden them somewhere nearby. She is returning to scavenge wild ass cats food leavings. I think she has been here all along, we just never saw her before. Anyway, I am not going to bother her. She can raise her babies around here. We are pretty isolated and there is not much activity to bother her. |

People routinely find babies and make pets out of them. They're very docile. That's where the phrase "playing possum" comes from. They hiss and such but freeze up like they are dead when threatened. Unfortunately they freeze up on top of my privacy fence then the dogs knock them off and have killed a few. Just move the basket if you are worried about them. |

The old ladies at my beach condo built feeding stations for all the local feral cats. I think some living to i’m told.
Im rarely there and haven’t seen it for myself. But I don’t imagine it being very sanitary. Feeding stations also attract other critters like possums and raccoons. 🤢 |
