Telegram is the only way to get the real news coming out of Russia and Ukraine.

That news is verboten, because it doesn't fit the narrative.

X might be next.

My friends in Europe and Australia think everything is rosy in Ukraine, they are fed good news and positive vibes.

We are on the path of control.

From that quote, this is more about criminal activity, not censoring mean posts.  If any of you have been following the Ukraine War threads, you'll have seen discussion of Russians hiring spies and saboteurs over Telegram;  it seems to be a preferred Russian communications app for their troops (who were using Baofeng unencrypted radios early in the 2022 invasion, and getting blown up thanks to that).

Criminals, scammers, fraud rings, whatever, can just as easily use email for a lot of that, of course, but still.  The arrest, from the only information OP gave, is about crime, not about mean tweets.

Oh, I don’t think any of it should be censored.

But I notice a certain contingent uses news like this to pretend like they are somehow superior to UK and French “subjects”.  Reality is, that sense of superiority is illusory and their government is doing the exact same shitty authoritarian things.

The UK government would probably be quite happy if that were to happen.  Tyrants dont like free speech.

Better solution than cutting off entirely, for the reason stated...though i still stand by my suggestion to replace the feed with a picture of sheep...

Lol JFC the disconnect from reality.

Musk is shit-scared the EU is going to block Twitter, he's not about to block the EU from Twitter. Twitter is theoretically still a money-making concern. Revenue is down by over 80% since he bought it. Think he can afford to lose a market of 500 million of the richest consumers in the world?

Telegram is rife with CSAM and human trafficking and scams. It's the preferred method of comms for ISIS and Russian intelligence operations in Europe. Pavel is going to give up the keys. I wouldn't be surprised if he's already agreed to it and this is a cover story.

you've got a bad American CNN take on European domestic politics at the moment

The EU has lost a lot of credibility domestically in Europe over the last 5-6 years. Entire political campaigns are waged on it (look at the PM of Italy right now) and countries are openly speaking of leaving it, and it's possible successor. Brussels is on thin ice and they know it. They aren't popular at the moment and struggling to hang on to what little credibility they have.

Please. Criminals use anything they can including other platforms like FB/IG and Google but you won't see them locked up because they bend the knee to these European socialist dictators.

One of the main ways Indian scammers get people is through Google AdSense. They are VERY savvy at Google SEO and will get their scam websites at the top of searches so people think the top link that shows up is the legit website. It's been a problem for years and Google nor govt's give a fuck.

The ONLY way to censor these apps is to run everything through centralized servers with filtering of messages and the second you do that these corrupt EU governments will come in demanding they censor right wing speech, speech against illegals, speech against government policy.

They use pedos and Russians to get their nose under the tent and then go full on tyranny to where you can't communicate with people. WTF is this? CCP China?

Our own government has been using the SAME excuses for a long time now trying to get backdoors into encryption protocols. Do you really trust the FBI with backdoor access to every online service?

Meloni immediately moderated and tacked towards the EU on being elected. Macron just crushed the French anti-EU right. 60% of UK voters now say Brexit was a mistake. You have a twitter/RT-informed take on European domestic politics at the moment.

Europeans hate the immigration policies of Merkel and the left and the European Parliament is trending right as a response. It's not going away, and the data laws aren't going to change.

The same establishment wrecking all of Western Civilization.  They will do what the U.S. cannot do (yet)--arrest people for allowing free speech.  It really is amazing that most of the world seemed to be against tyrannical communist governments sixteen years ago.  Mass psychosis induced by a corrupt media.

They are going full CCP type control.

Not true, Telegram is full of Russian propaganda and misinformation like everywhere else. It is just as often found here on GD as well. There are no shortages of fools, willful ignorant, and enablers of evil. You must do your homework. AI doesn’t make it easier either. Then you have those who hate freedom. They don’t care if it is true or false, they just love to hate and puff themselves up. Use discernment and question everything. Don’t forget you are up against professionals with immense resources trained to deceive you, lure you into a false reality, and use you. It is what they live for.

I said the same things for decades. Now at 73, it is largely their fight. Teach them and the grandchildren. Make them warriors against evil if they are ever to have a chance in this day and age. The world is far more dangerous than it was for us. The love for freedom is weaker than ever. More and more are preferring to hide than fight. We will lose everything if this continues. People all around us sre willing to sell us out for a few trinkets. The wolves are among us. Where are the guardians?

I don’t disagree criminals on the internet are a huge problem. However, when you allow foreign intelligence to freely operate we have a far more dangerous problem. How do you propose stopping them? Doing nothing is not an option. The have thousands of people, trained and equipped with weapons most people can not see or comprehend. There has to be a counter force with the tools to stop them. Free speech is most precious to us but foreign intelligence is not a free speech issue. They are at war with us.
