Interesting that the 73 has a rifle and not a carbine stock

12 inches gets some decent speed out of .44, without being cumbersome.

I guess you could order them any way you want. Rifle stock may have been more comfortible.

Interesting history on this configuration 1873 trapper .... I have a period bayonet that fits mine ....

Only about 14,000 made. A low number in the gun manufacturing game.

Supposedly many destroyed during Civil War. Many probably just used up with everyday use.

$25K-$35K for pedestrian guns in verious conditions. Depends how bad the buyer wants the gun. Some higher.

A lot more for guns with Civil War provenance or owned my someone of noteriety. Engraved gun presented to President Lincoln as a sales pitch is in the Smithsonion.

Mine was about $30K and I thought I got a decent deal.

My lever guns.  From top to bottom:  Winchester 94, 1951 production, my dad's twin brother's rifle.  Marlin Texan in 30-30; since sold.  Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70; it now sports a Ranger Point Precision rear peep sight.*  I'm getting ready to take it to a bear hunt here shortly.  Marlin/Remlin 1894 in .44 mag; since sold.

Marlin/Remlin 336 Youth model in 30-30.  The only lever gun I have with the despised pistol grip.

I also have his weatherby mkv in 300 weatherby magnum. My grandma bought him this rifle in the late 60's. My mom remembers going with her her to get it at the weatherby store in LA. He really loved this rifle. I remember shooting it and abruptly hating the recoil. When my grandma bought it she also bought 300 rounds of ammo. He shot most of it then reloaded it I still have some of the original ammo from the original purchase.

The 3rd would he his M1, he mail ordered it a year or 2 after his 1911.  I really love shooting this. He tought me the fundamentals of reloading for this rifle on his single stage press in his garage. I still use his favorite load for it.

I'll add a 4th to the list. I didn't think about it because I've had the rifle for almost 16 years. It's his Winchester model 70 in 30-06. He bought it in 1948, he said he took a bus to town and bought the rifle. They wrapped it up in newspaper and he took it home. He took his first deer with it and was the only thing he brought back from Michigan after he moved to California. I don't have a picture of the rifle by itself but this was taken in 08 the last time we went shooting. I found this picture a few years ago on photobucket and PAspeedmaster and another good guy ( can't remember his name) cleaned it up for me. He's shooting the model 70.

Curiosity killed the cat, what were the 3 guns you really remember, you dont have to tell the story. My dad was not a handgun guy, but he wasn't against them. So he had 3 guns a nylon 66 , a browning sweet 16, and a model 10 Smith. I learned to shoot on all 3. When I was 15, 30 years ago he loaned me the last $20 to buy a skinny barreled ruger mk2 from a friends dad. We didn't shoot up schools then. I still have all 4

1886 45-70, 1892 44mag, 1892 357 mag.

All worked on by Turnbull.

Still need an ‘73 Winchester. Maybe one of the new Ruger built Marlin guide guns too.

How do you like it?  I just became aware of and handled one last week. Was looking at a Chiappa 1892 Alaskan Takedown online but think it better to go the S&W route.

The first gun I ever bought was my 1894 SRC in 30-30 (30wcf).  It's 100th birthday will be in two years.  Still shoots dead on at 100 yds with 170gr rounds.

My Cimarron is one of my most fun guns to shoot. I just wish 45 Colt would come down in price a bit more.

I put this Winchester 88 together about 12 years ago for my dad.  It started life (with me) as a rusted up barreled action in .308.  I made a new barrel for it in 22-250imp and my dad provided the stock for the project.

I haven't shot it yet, been dealing with health bullshit.  But I like everything about it except they could have left off the dumb safety.  I hope to take it deer hunting this year.

16" Henry .22 and a .44 Henry X, very happy with both rifles. I have an RPP handguard for the .44 I need to install. .22 and .44 make a great levergun combo!

@Bravo_Six what kind of velocity do you get from the 12” compared to a 16’ 18, or 20” .44?

Do you handload for it with slightly faster powder to get a more complete burn?

@towerofpower94

I don't have my notes in front of me and it varies by load, but IIRC, I get 200-300 more FPS with 240 grain bullets from my 12" rifle versus my 5.5" revolver.

I don't own anything longer in .44, but I recall reading what other people were getting out of 16 inch barrels and the difference was negligible.... maybe 50 more FPS from 16" vs 12".

That’s really interesting. Thanks.

My findings with .45ACP are very similar. A 5” Tisas 1911 and 12.5” DI AR45 upper are basically a wash. The AR45 obviously allows for better accuracy and for IR lasers though
