I know a little about why Italians were called guineas, in the 1700 most of the sailors were from Portugal and the sailors always were sailing to west africa the Guinea coast and those Portuguese were called "guineas", so the early Italians did not look anything like the Irish and looked more like those Portuguese sailors and were called "guineas". WOPS come from the Ellis Island term as those undocumented Italians who arrived there in the early 20th century it means "without papers"....

Yankee was probably derived from the early Dutch who were called "Yonkers" I remember reading that in the History of NYC...

I noticed you didn't include the N word. I have always been curious about this. Some have said that it was because the slaves came here primarily from Nigeria and the white people didn't want to call em nigerians but just called em nigers (with the 'i' pronounced the same as in 'high') and then different accents and plain ignorance took it to the racial slur we have. Someone else once told me that the slaves were originally called Nigra's (Nigra is IIRC the spanish word for 'Black') but the pronunciation changed overtime through, once again, accents and ignorance.

The common origin for "wop" is likely wrong.  It seems the term spelled "wap" was in use before this.

Like  wog, wop is often thought to be an acronym for With Out Passport, supposedly used on Ellis Island to designate immigrants without proper papers. This pejorative term for an Italian was probably first used in America, but its roots are in the Romance languages.




Like many other etymologies contained in these pages, this one is not certain, although most authorities agree on the likely origin. It probably derives from the Italian dialectical guappo, or thug. This in turn derives from the Spanish guapo, meaning a dashing braggart or bully, and which eventually derives from the Latin vappa, meaning flat wine or scoundrel.

OK, I'll take on the "N" word.  Negro, derived from a proper Spanish word for the color black, without pejorative implication, was Naeger (pronounced nay-ger) in German and possibly with a slight spelling difference in Dutch.  Simply the proper word.  Twisted with ill intent, and...

WOP (without papers) was a tag put on immigrants who had no papers but couldn't express that in English, either.

Honkie, derived from Hunkie, applied to the Hungarian immigrants.

Still not sure about the "Jerry".  An earlier poster gave a Serbo Croation derivation, but the "Schwab" would merely refer to a region in Southwestern Germany, now Baden-Wuerttemberg, referred to in previous centuries as Schwabenland or Swabia, populated by Schwabs, speaking a Schwebish dialect of German.  Can't see it, though it may be valid.

Spic, maybe "no speaka da English?"  I've heard this as an origin but can't really be sure.  Sounds plausible, though.

Dago may actually have originally referred to Spanish, though I've heard it mostly for Italian.  I once heard Dago used in reference to Spanish in some British play or similar source.  The plausible origin possibly is the name Diego.  Still don't get the Italian connection, though.

Another one I heard for Guinea was that Italian immigrants (and, I assume others) were afraid, or told to be wary of being caught in New York without money and possibly being arrested for vagrancy.  So, have a Guinea (1 pound,1 shilling  IIRC) handy.  

Kike/Keikel as posted earlier, is the same as I heard.

The Term Redskin

Let me explain why. Back not so long ago, when there was a bounty on the heads of the Indian people...the trappers would bring in Indian scalps along with the other skins that they had managed to trap or shoot. These scalps brought varying prices as did the skins of the animals.

The trappers would tell the trading post owner or whoever it was that he was dealing with, that he had 2 bearskins, a couple of beaver skins...and a few scalps. Well, the term "scalp" offended the good Christian women of the community and they asked that another term be found to describe these things. So, the trappers and hunters began using the term "redskin"...they would tell the owner that they had bearskin, deer skins....and "redskins."

The term came from the bloody mess that one saw when looking at the scalp...thus the term "red"...skin because it was the "skin" of an "animal" just like the others that they had...so, it became "redskins". So, you see when we see or hear that term...we don't see a football team...we don't see a game being played...we don't see any "honor"...we see the bloody pieces of scalps that were hacked off of our men, women and even our children...we hear the screams as our people were killed...and "skinned" just like animals.

I've traced "Cracker" back to the American Revolution.  It was applied only to the lower class whites who lived on the frontier.  The landed gentry (plantation owners) of the Carolinas were considered to be among the most cultured in the English speaking society.

"Turnkey" in reference to jailers goes back to at least the American Revolution too.

Sorry, dude.  False etymology.  "Wop" is derived from the Sicilian/Neopolitan dialectical "guappo," which came to be a term of affection meaning something like "handsome guy" or "dude."  When Italians came to America and went around calling each other "guappo," those who had been here a bit longer shortened it to "wop."
