Sportsman's Guide has M1928A1 Thompson kits for sale. These guns were ostensibly issued to the Russians in WWII with M3 Stuart light tanks. The story is the Russians didn't use the guns because of lack of ammo and they were recently discovered in a cave.

Other than using this kit to build a mock up display, could one build a working gun from these kits, legally speaking?

Thompson parts kit.

Is the Thompson an open or closed bolt weapon?

Semi thompsons do exist, so there SHOULD be a way....

It would require welding/metal-work skill, of course...

There's a post on one of the gun boards about a guy who is building a semi-auto Sten from a Sten kit.

He apparently has a pretty extensive machine shop though.

I'm not a lawyer, but from what I understand, it's legal to make your own gun as long as it's not fully auto, it is the correct length, etc.

State laws may vary.

I wonder what the 922r import restrictions would say regarding having a certain amount of US made parts in the weapon though?

Thompson, A-okay.   But Sten or AK parts tear down?

There's been some discussion of how to build a semi from these parts kits over on the Thompson board at www.machinegunbooks.com.  Suffice it to say, it's difficult and a lot of effort -- but can be done.  When you add the cost of the 80% receiver you need and the kit modifications, it becomes darned expensive too.

You will also need to SBR it since the barrel is only 10 1/2".
