Nikola Tesla
he demonstrated a radio controlled boat to the US military, believing that the military would want things such as radio controlled torpedoes. Tesla developed the "Art of Telautomatics", a form of robotics.[23] In 1898, a radio-controlled boat was demonstrated to the public during an electrical exhibition at Madison Square Garden. These devices had an innovative coherer and a series of logic gates Directed-energy weapon Later in life, Tesla made some remarkable claims concerning a "teleforce" weapon[37] The press called it a "peace ray" or death ray.[38][39] In total, the components and methods included:[40][41] An apparatus for producing manifestations of energy in free air instead of in a high vacuum as in the past. This, according to Tesla in 1934, was accomplished. A mechanism for generating tremendous electrical force. This, according to Tesla, was also accomplished. A means of intensifying and amplifying the force developed by the second mechanism. A new method for producing a tremendous electrical repelling force. This would be the projector, or gun, of the invention. Tesla worked on plans for a directed-energy weapon between the early 1900s till the time of his death. In 1937, Tesla composed a treatise entitled "The Art of Projecting Concentrated Non-dispersive Energy through the Natural Media" concerning charged particle beams.[42] Tesla published the document in an attempt to expound on the technical description of a "superweapon that would put an end to all war". This treatise of the particle beam is currently in the Nikola Tesla Museum archive in Belgrade. It described an open ended vacuum tube with a gas jet seal that allowed particles to exit, a method of charging particles to millions of volts, and a method of creating and directing nondispersive particle streams (through electrostatic repulsion). [43] Records of his indicate that it was based on a narrow stream of atomic clusters of liquid mercury or tungsten accelerated via high voltage (by means akin to his magnifying transformer). Tesla gave the following description concerning the particle gun's operation: [The nozzle would] "send concentrated beams of particles through the free air, of such tremendous energy that they will bring down a fleet of 10,000 enemy airplanes at a distance of 200 miles from a defending nation's border and will cause armies to drop dead in their tracks".[44] The weapon could be used against ground based infantry or for antiaircraft purposes.[45] Tesla tried to interest the US War Department in the device.[46] He also offered this invention to European countries.[47] None of the governments purchased a contract to build the device. He was unable to act on his plans.[48] The man was clearly ahead of his time. remember the reports of Islamofacists dieing of "mysteriouse wounds" recently? (internal injuries with little sign of entry wounds? Immediately after Tesla's death became known, the Federal Bureau of Investigation instructed the Office of Alien Property to take possession of his papers and property, despite his US citizenship. His safe at the hotel was also opened. At the time of his death, Tesla had been continuing work on the teleforce weapon, or death ray, that he had unsuccessfully marketed to the US War Department. It appears that his proposed death ray was related to his research into ball lightning and plasma and was composed of a particle beam weapon. The US government did not find a prototype of the device in the safe. After the FBI was contacted by the War Department, his papers were declared to be top secret |

Tied for first in my "favorite scientists, overall" category and my absolute favorite electrical engineer, bar none. In my opinion, the most incredible thing wasn't the radio controlled [miniature] boat, per se, it was the manner/method of control. It was (IIRC) voice-activated. |

Tesla IS my #1 favorite scientist, of all time... He was 100 years ahead of his time. I love the stuff he had to say about how Einstein was WRONG. People didn't/don't understand Tesla's stuff, so they think he was a nut. He was simply to far ahead of his time to be taken seriously. I just wish his theories on gravity would be de-classified. The USA is so fortunate to have atracted him here from yugoslavia... now WE get the shizzle, not russia, or france, etc...! |

Did you know that Skinner actually developed a guided bomb for the U.S. military during World War 2? It was based on trained pigeons (INSIDE the bomb), conditioned to recognize a target, and keeping the bomb on that target. There seems to be no reason for why it wouldn't have worked, but it was never taken seriously. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Pigeon One of my older colleagues lived next to Skinner as a graduate student, and saw both the original Skinner Box and some of the prototypes for the bombs. |

Pascagoula Alien Abduction
My teacher/friend's cousin was involved in one fo the most popular abduction stories. His name is Charles Hickon (the cousin in the article.) He stands by his story to this day. |

One word I didn't see in there and have never seen applied to the concept is "suspicion". That's what I've always though caused (or at least contributed) to the phenomenon. A teddy bear is cute, even a robotic one. An "android clone" would be either undetectable or "human enough". But something in the valley would be like an imposter. |
